How to Save Money at Alpine 24/7 Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot express enough gratitude to the entire team at Alpine 24/7 Pet Hospital for the extraordinary, around-the-clock care they provided to my dog, Josie. She was diagnosed with parvovirus and required two plasma transfusions along with seven days of hospitalization, and every single doctor and staff member who cared for her went above and beyond. From the moment we walked through the doors, I felt supported, informed, and truly cared for. The doctors were incredibly knowledgeable, compassionate, and dedicated—constantly monitoring her progress, adjusting her treatment plan, and keeping me updated during one of the most stressful experiences a pet owner can go through. The veterinary technicians and support staff treated Josie as if she were their own, showing her so much kindness and comfort during her recovery. Thanks to their skill, teamwork, and unwavering commitment, Josie was able to fight through a very serious illness. I will forever be grateful for the exceptional care she received. Thank you, Alpine 24/7, for giving my girl a fighting chance and for being there every hour of every day when she needed you most. Your team is truly incredible.

Stay away from this clinic by all means!!! We brought our older dog (almost 16 years old) to Alpine Pet Hospital for consultation about a minor issue. We were told a full examination was required, and we agreed. They performed blood work, a urine test, and X-rays of her heart and lungs. We were then told that our dog had a UTI, an enlarged heart, and fluid in her lungs, and that she needed to stay in the hospital overnight. Our dog had zero symptoms of any of these diagnoses. When we came the next morning to pick her up, the clinic refused to release our dog, stating that she needed to be euthanized because she was old and “suffering.” This was completely untrue. Our dog had a happy life and was not suffering at all. We said we wanted to take her home and would arrange at-home euthanasia if she ever started to suffer. We were then given an ultimatum: • euthanize our dog immediately at their clinic, or • leave her at the clinic for further treatment. We were also told that they would report us to the Humane Society and that our dog would be taken away. When I said that they seemed more interested in money than in our dog’s well-being and that I would write a negative review, they called the owner of the clinic, Dr. Saša Karagić. The owner gave us a document to sign (which we did), provided antibiotics for the supposed UTI, and told us they would still report us to the Humane Society. We took our dog and left. The next day, our dog was doing perfectly fine, so I questioned whether she even needed the medication. I brought her urine sample to another veterinary clinic and was told there was no UTI. That evening, police came to our home to take our dog. We were not home, but our neighbor told us that police were banging on our door for almost half an hour. Later, we received a call from a Humane Society peace officer saying they had received a report that our dog was in distress and should be euthanized. We were also told that police had attended our home. The entire police team came to seize our small, Bichon Frise-sized dog—as if there was nothing else for the Calgary police to do. We told the Humane Society peace officer that we did not trust Alpine Pet Hospital and wanted a second opinion. We then went to another veterinarian, who performed a full examination and confirmed that our dog’s lungs were perfect and that there were no health concerns, aside from minor age-related issues. We sent this report to the Humane Society. They contacted the veterinarian to confirm the findings and informed us that they were closing our file. However, they told us police could still come to our home because it was a “separate division.” This entire situation was extremely stressful for our elderly dog and for us. We also paid a huge amount of money for tests, hospitalization, and treatment that were completely unnecessary. Our experience with Alpine Pet Hospital was traumatic—both financially and psychologically. Based on what we went through, I strongly warn others to be very cautious and to seek a second opinion immediately if faced with similar pressure.

Have used this clinic multiple times over the years with multiple pets, Sasha and all the other doctors care about the welfare of the animal. I also appreciate that they know the limits of their capacity at the clinic, one visit we were told that their was nothing more they could do to save our Tinkerbell, and we Transferred her to Western VCA who specialized staff/equipment. This is always our first stop for vet in Calgary.

While this facility states it is open 24/7, they do not have vets on 24/7. When pet owners have an emergency and need a vet right away, they don’t want to be sitting there for hours waiting for the next vets shift to start. When the vet (Courtney Porter) finally arrived, we were misled with the treatment that my dog would be receiving. When animals are sick and out of their comfort zone, they are already stressed, as is their owner. Courtney continue to take my dog to the back room for testing and blood work. I was told they would take him back there once and get everything done. They took him four times to the back. Causing undue stress. By the fourth time, I asked why he continuously has to be separated for me. I began to get snippy remarks about “ shorthanded, staff.” we ended up being there for hours. My Dog was more stressed out than ever when we left. After paying hundreds of dollars, we were advised our regular vet would receive the report and documents from our visit. Our vet never received the report or documents. Courtney was more concerned with promoting her title than treating my pet/my family member. Save your money. Do not visit this clinic!
