How to Save Money at Calgary Family Veterinarian
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.
How Do You Choose the Right Pet Insurance Provider?
Pet Insurance Review makes it incredibly easy for pet parents to select an insurance provider they feel good about. You can use our handy comparison tool to get the gist of what a company offers. Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

!Woof woof!🐾 My name is Ghost, and I’m a proud Jack Russell Terrier here to tell you all about my latest visit to the clinic—because, well, it was pawsitively amazing! Dr. Yolanda treated me like royalty! I got the star treatment—extra belly rubs, treats (don’t tell mom!), and lots of pampering. I’d go back any day for more of that! Oh, and they even drew a little ghost on my medication bag to match my name! I mean, the detail! Thank you to everyone for taking such great care of me. See you soon (just for treats and scratches next time—says my dad)! 🐶 Tail wags and paw shakes, Ghost 👻

A few days ago, I had to say goodbye to my sweet boy, Matteo. Dr. Lopez and her veterinary assistant were truly amazing, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. This was my first time going through this difficult process, and I did a lot of research on in-home euthanasia services. Calgary Family Vet stood out during my search. Their website offers pet quality-of-life evaluations and resource links to help you understand your pet’s current state. This compassionate approach showed me that they genuinely care about your family member as well as you. Dr. Lopez and her team made this experience as positive as it could be. Their warmth, kindness, care, and attention toward Matteo, myself, and my family are beyond words. Dr. Lopez calmly greeted us, professionally explained the entire process, and guided us through each step. After giving Matteo a painkiller, he wanted to go outside. Dr. Lopez followed and asked that if this was where he wanted to be, would I be ok with that. which I was – it was exactly where I wanted to be as well. She assured us that we could take our time with each step, which brought great comfort. Once Matteo had passed and we said our goodbyes, Dr. Lopez and her assistant handled him with such gentleness and respect. Dr. Lopez mentioned that Matteo’s ashes would be ready by the end of the week or early next week. To my surprise, I received an email the very next day letting me know Matteo was ready for pick-up. When I arrived, Dr. Lopez and her assistant were there to greet me with another warm hug, which meant so much. It takes a truly special kind of person to show the compassion and care that Dr. Lopez and her assistant do. I am incredibly grateful to have had them by our side during such a difficult time. Matteo was a special pup, and I couldn’t have asked for more caring people to be there for him and our family. Thank you for making such a painful process more bearable.

Dr. Lopez and her staff are incredible. Before I found them, I was always nervous about going to the vet, but even the very first visit with Dr. Lopez put me at ease. When you enter their office, you know that care for your pet(s) and their caretakers is forefront, with the calming and comfortable exam rooms and medical decisions that are made with expertise and your pet's best interests at heart. When we had to say goodbye to our beloved shiba, Dr. Lopez and her team were able to do a home visit that was intimate, caring, and peaceful for everyone, despite the pain we were all going through. I can't recommend them enough!

From the moment I contacted calgary Family Vet asking a lot of questions about at home euthanasia for our beloved Labrador Matteo, I felt like they truly cared for and respected the dog, owner and family. They responded very quickly with detailed information in a very compassionate and respectful tone. Their services can be combined with Pet Heaven Crematorium in a seamless way so we only had to deal with Calgary Family Vet. That saved us the pain of repeating the story and coordination of services. When the time came to proceed with this, the service continued to be exceptional. Dr. Lopez and her assistant kept us informed of their expected time of arrival and when they arrived took lots of time to introduce themselves, meet all of us and explain what the rest of the time together would look like. They took exceptional care of Matteo the dog, the owner and all of the family who were present. They were so kind, caring gentle and sympathetic it really helped us through a difficult situation and allowed Matteo to pass peacefully in his favourite place at home. His backyard. If you are debating whether at home is better than at the clinic, it is definitely far more intimate and personalized as well as less stressful for your pet and for you. I highly recommend Calgary Family Vet for this service when you need it.
