How to Save Money at Bow Bottom Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Probably the worst vet I have ever been too. The administration is extremely poor. I have called a few times seeking records for my pets and they always send the incorrect documentation. Additionally, everytime I bring one of my animals in. Records were also were not transfer to our new vet properly. I am left alone in a room for over an hour. We have switched vets. Do not recommend.

TLDR; Sales-vet. Stay away. The clinic is nice, the staff are kind and professional, they will give your pet treats and try to make the visit feel special. However, you will be there for over an hour, and the vet will go in and out of the room several times like she's seeing 2 patients at once, she didn't make me feel confident in her examination as it felt very rushed and like my cat wasn't her focus. Vet talks VERY fast, making it hard to understand her, and we were left in the room after the visit unsure if the appointment was over until a tech came in and told us we can leave. Follow up questions with the vet would have her on unrelated tangents, there was never a straight foward answer. We left with a stage 2 kidney disease diagnosis and a special diet. I have been getting emails ever since trying to book my cat in for a dental cleaning. The vet gave us a "report card" via email after the appointment, that stating my cat has gingivitis, and the only symptom listed was "pain". I tried to ask about other options for my cats dental health, such as the specialized food, as I was worried about putting her under anaesthetic with her kidney disease. I was told no, no other options, only dental cleaning. I took my cat to a new vet for a second opinion, my cat does not have pain or gingivitis. This vet either lied outright, or mistook my cats non-immediate compliance to her shoving a finger in my cats mouth as pain. Our new vet took their time to make my cat comfortable before gently pulling her mouth open to take a look, giving me much more confidence in the new vet's examination over this clinic. We were not left waiting, the new vet did not leave and come back several times, the visit with our new vet was quick and efficient. Our new vet does NOT recommend a dental cleaning based on this examination, her age (16), the heart murmur this vet seems to have missed, and her kidney disease. She is too high risk for an unnecessary cleaning. This all happened in March-April 2024. I received two texts, not emails, in June 2024 from this clinic to book more blood tests for my cats kidneys, and nothing since; but have received several emails and continue to receive emails with information to book a dental cleaning. This made it obvious to me that they do not care about my cats health, only making money off me. I will not be back to this clinic, as all they seem to want is to push dental cleanings on at-risk patients, sell homemade treats, and do every test under the sun on your pet. Our recent blood work and urinalysis at the new vet was OVER 50% CHEAPER than this clinic, because they didn't do unnecessary extra testing. Save yourself and your wallet the trouble and go somewhere else. PS for the clinic: you should proof read your documents. An echocardiogram and electrocardiogram are not the same thing, you cannot use them interchangeably.

As a first time puppy owner the entire staff here made my first visit an amazing experience! Dr. Schell had so much insight to share and worked diligently to ease the pain my pup was feeling. The staff did an equally excellent job in easing the anxiety I felt having him go into dental surgery by answering all my questions and concerns. My boy is feeling great the next day and I am so happy knowing he has a veterinary team that loves him as much as I do. They really go above and beyond here. The quality of care is everything a pet owner could wish for (and more)

Warning: This Clinic does not give you the choice of euthanasia for an aged pet at end of life. You will need to take your pet to another clinic for that service. They only want to do treatments to prolong life and reduce pain, and continue doing tests. This may not be the most compassionate choice for your pet, and can cause additional stress and guilt for the pet owner. I have had to change my rating from 5 to 2 stars. This is an extremely good veterinary hospital. I also board my pet there, worry free! Dr. Schell is very knowledgeable, and she cares so much about the pets and their family. The staff are great. I highly recommend this clinic!

They were totally awesome with our dog and gave it royal treatment. Like it was their own dog. Extremely friendly and professional handling. Do not look any further, this is the place to bring your pet for the best handling and reasonable rates.
