How to Save Money at Sturgeon Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
I have been to this animal hospital quite a few times for specific reasons as well as for check up and maintenance on my pets and other foster animals in my care. Dr Weins is amazing such a gentleman and genius when it comes to these animals and his care for them He’s and optic specialist and requires a referral from another vet to get into, but that was easy and we were in promptly within a few days of making the appointment. The front area was very clean spread out and comfortable. The staff were helpful knowledgeable and friendly. Right when we got in, we were welcomed promptly into a medical room, the technician was very thorough also very friendly and kind. The doctor was in shortly and was very very thorough, on this visit we had a challenge with one of my fosters eyes. The doctor performed several examinations to determine what needed to be done with his care moving forward. The cost a visit was extremely reasonable and I would definitely recommend anyone to this veterinary hospital. Thanks to all the staff.

I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Wiens and team. We were referred to them by Lapspay in Calgary along with VCA but we couldn’t be happier with our decision to make the trip to St. Albert instead. Let me also say that price does not reflect the quality of care you get because this place was top notch and way more affordable than Calgary not to mention way more accepting of some behavioural issues. We had both our Doodles laparoscopic spays and gastropexies done here. We have one anxious (fearful, freezes, potties) and one recently become very vet reactive. The team was so accommodating and didn’t traumatize them further. Dr.Weins took things slow and allowed me to stay with them even until sedation and moving each one over for surgery. I wanted to cry I was so pleased with their handling here as elsewhere they’ve been scared to death by their last set of vaccines and manhandled without me for bloodwork causing stress. They sent them home in quality onesies that fit perfectly. They’ve checked on them twice now and answered my questions by phone and email. Both were in such good spirits after surgery for transport home. The young lady that kept coming in to check on us and checked us out was also so lovely and thorough. Thank you!!

Very nice facility. Was a bit disappointed that the practice was not a cat friendly accredited facility. There was no feliaway in the room and my cats were more fractious than I've ever seen them at the vet before much to my surprise. But only reacted poorly to the vet and both were nervous from the Vet Tech. Staff were very friendly and informative. But would really appreciate if in time it became an accredited cat friendly practice.

Nothing short of amazing. Last night we brought our dog to the 24 hr animal hospital in Edmonton where we received absolutely appalling service. Our dog quickly became very ill and with no choice took him there where his needs were completely neglected and at one point staff admitted they forgot about him; nearly 8 hours of waiting without even speaking to a vet. We ultimately left without seeing a vet and only then did staff seem to care? Today first thing we brought him to the Sturgeon Animal hospital where he received remarkable care. Dr. Watts performed emergency surgery on him, a vet technician came in on days off to assist and I’ve been told another vet who was there on days off scrubbed in to help. All of this on a weekend without any notice. Dr. Watts was compassionate, informative and truly went above and beyond even calling after hours a number of times asking if we have any concerns throughout the night or over the long weekend. We’ve been taking our dog here for a few years, all the staff are amazing, they treat the pets like their own and provide a level of compassionate care that is unparalleled anywhere. Today we almost lost our dog had it not been for Dr. Watts and his amazing staff! We’re truly grateful!

I had my first visit today with our adopted cat from the Humane Society and the entire experience was great from start to finish. I can tell they really love animals there and they gave some realistic and honest advice. We will definitely be making this our vet of choice ♥️😻
