How to Save Money at St. Laurent Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Zoe and I just went on our first vet trip and she was very nervous and vocal. The people there were quick and attentive to her. They tried to make her as comfortable as possible and they are overall a great place to take your loved ones and not have to worry to much cause they are in great hands. Thanks!

I suddenly had to put my cat down. I couldn't have asked for a better place. The Dr. was very gentle and kind and made his passing peaceful. Thank you to everyone. Thank you for the card! it's very much appreciated. Kitty's mom.

I will start off by saying I am a quadriplegic so having to get ready to go for an appointment is definitely not an easy task for me or my wife. Today we had an appointment for our two dogs who have a terrible ear infection. We get to the appointment to be told it's been cancelled because they couldn't reach us to confirm which is seriously nothing but a lie! Both my wife and I have not left our house in 3 weeks due to my wife needing a gallbladder operation and with the change in weather I go through absolute hell with spasticity a condition I have where all my muscles get so tense I have a hard time breathing. Like I said they NEVER called to confirm on our home phone number because it is literally within reach of where I sit all day everyday and my phone has not rang in over a week! I just checked my phone to make sure there's no issues and it works perfectly fine! Then after going to the appointment they tell us they will not be seeing us today an we will have to pre pay for our next appointment which would have been in two weeks! How disgusting is that ! The thing is money is far from the issue ,the issue is this half assed vet lying about saying they tried to call and got no answer, also since when does any business cancel an appointment just because they say they couldn't confirm it? For how badly this vet scalps their clients you'd think they'd want to make more money instead of turning away business! I will never return to this sham of a clinic as this is not the first major issue I have had with this horribly run clinic. I have a feeling that the real reason we were turned away is because our dogs are pitbulls! Yet while we were waiting outside our dogs were almost attacked by a labradoodle and because my dogs are properly trained they didn't react or bark! I should be able to charge this vet a fee for cancelling without any notice just as they would to me! Stay away from here is you don't want to put up with what I just did! They are beyond unprofessional!

Always takes amazing care of my kitty Nylah. She recently got spayed and managed to rip open her stitches twice. The staff including Kylah have been extremely supportive and helpful through this healing process. Vets can be quite expensive, but I’ve never been overcharged by the staff at SLAH. They glued my girls’ incision for free and prolonged her meds to be extra helpful. This vet is worth every penny.

I was able to get a last minute appointment for our bunny. They took excellent care of him and even clipped his nails. Would highly recommend for any animal.
