How to Save Money at Bowness Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very kind staff. Their bigger facility is spacious. Dr. Douglas is really thorough. I take my senior daughter here for regular check-ups and blood work.

Bowness Vet Clinic, staff, etc - 5/5 Dr. Satnam - 1/5 All the staff are amazing and we’ve always had good experiences here. Other reviews are similar when it comes to their main doctor, Dr. Satnam. Usually another Dr sees us who is amazing, so caring and actually cares to explain what’s going on to you and shows you. We took our cat for his yearly check up and it was Dr. Satnam who saw us. He told us his teeth were horrible and he needed a big dental cleaning ASAP. He pointed to a chart of cat teeth and told us he had the worst category of it, and that he could get an infection and that it could be life threatening if we don’t get him a professional teeth cleaning. We looked in his mouth afterwards and his gums were baby pink (as they should be) not black or yellow like the chart category he pointed to. But because we love our cat very much and I couldn’t stop thinking about it what Dr. Santam said, I got his teeth cleaned at another clinic and both the dentist and the assistant told me he had the cleanest cat teeth and gums they’ve seen in a long long while… and they showed me photos of his pearly whites before the cleaning. So, Dr. Santam just wants to take your money amd uses the love for your pets against you. We don’t come to Calgary often, but when we do we still come here because everyone else is lovely- I just recommend asking for any other Dr that isn’t Dr Santam when booking in. Hope this helps and saves you some $$

Thanks to all the staff that have been caring for our tripawd Aspen! He has had such a rough summer, but thanks to your drive thru injections with Librella, plus the suggestions with Omega oils and glucosamine, Rather than limping on 2 legs, Aspen is running and jumping again! Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks to you all for this gift!!!

This vet is absolutely phenomenal. Prices are reasonable, and once you’re a regular it really does feel like a little family, they’re very kind and treat your pet with love and kindness. My cat recently passed away, and the process of putting her down was well explained and gentle, they even set up a dim lit room with a pillow and a cat tree and everything. I Absolutely recommend going to this vet, and I thank this vet from the bottom of my heart for the endless care for our pets.

I had a very unhelpful and expensive experience here. My cat was showing signs of distress and we didn't know why. We went to this clinic and saw a young female veterinarian. She did an x-ray of my cat's digestive track and a blood panel. She said my cat definitely had a blockage there. There was an option to send the X-ray to a radiologist. I did ask for that and the radiologist said she did not have any obstruction, just a gas bubble. She gave me a wrong diagnosis. Furthermore she did not notice on the blood panel that my cat's kidney numbers were way way out of whack. Luckily I then took her to the 10th Avenue animal hospital where they diagnosed her with extreme dehydration and put her on an IV. So this clinic which calls itself a hospital and is not a hospital at all not only give me a wrong diagnosis but also failed to notice extreme numbers related to her kidneys. I paid $1,300 for this and I'm very angry about that.
