SPOT PET INSURANCE IS VERY MISLEADING - DON'T USE SPOT
Spot Pet Insurance is very misleading about what is and isn’t covered under their plans. In my experience, their representatives also provide inaccurate and sometimes contradictory information. Here are two recent examples: Example 1 My dog Oscar developed stomach issues—gurgling, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Our vet suspected a poultry sensitivity and prescribed a specific diet from JustFoodForDogs, since they avoid cross-contamination of proteins. Before moving forward, I called Spot Pet Insurance, explained the situation in detail, and even provided the vet’s recommendation. The representative told me that if it was a diet-based issue, they would cover the cost of the food for the first month as part of the diagnostic process, though not for long-term maintenance. That sounded reasonable, so I purchased the prescribed food. However, when I submitted the claim, it was denied. When I followed up, I was told it was considered a pre-existing condition because my dog had a “gurgling stomach” noted the previous year. (What dog doesn’t occasionally have a gurgling stomach?) My vet clarified that this was a new and much more serious issue affecting his entire system. Spot advised me to file an appeal. I did—but received no response. After a month, I called again and was told the appeal was denied due to the type of diet prescribed, despite the fact that I had clearly explained this upfront before purchasing anything. They literally changed the reason for denying the claim and paid out nothing. Example 2 My dog later needed two teeth extracted. Again, I called Spot in advance and was told the procedure would be covered. Once I submitted the claim, it was denied. This time, I was told that because a vet had noted minor tartar on my dog’s teeth four years earlier, so any dental issue would be considered a pre-existing condition. Essentially, they would treat all dental problems as pre-existing. My vet explained that the extractions were age-related and unrelated to past tartar, but Spot still denied the claim. Based on my experience, Spot Pet Insurance finds ways to deny claims using overly broad definitions of “pre-existing conditions,” even when issues are clearly new or unrelated. My recommendation: avoid Spot Pet Insurance
