I am dissatisfied with claim 6202976
I am dissatisfied with my recent claim 6202976 experience regarding Vincent. He was diagnosed with gastritis in 2018 and I met my deductible. In December 2020 he had another incident of gastritis. This claim was documented incorrectly that the condition was 'motion sickness', apparently because he was prescribed anti-nausea medicine. My vet informed Trupanion by phone on approximately 1/8/21 that the diagnosis was gastritis. Although the diagnosis was gastritis it was applied to a new deductible. On the EOB it states that once a condition is met it is per condition and applies for the life of the pet. The following is an excerpt from the EOB: "Deductible - The amount you need to pay before your insurance kicks in. With a Trupanion policy, this is a per-condition deductible. This means you'll only pay it once for each new condition and after that, the condition is covered for life." I spoke to 3 representatives the last week of December and January 13 and 14. They stated that the illness did not apply to the previous incident of gastritis because it was 2 years later and was 'resolved', 'not chronic' and 'not linked' to the previous gastritis. The terms 'resolved', 'not chronic' and 'not linked' do not appear in Trupanion's entire 20 page policy. I then received a call from a supervisor (on my request) the following week. He could not have been nicer but basically reiterated what the representatives had told me and that they would not accept an appeal. I think the company should abide by it's policy and the definitions in it. The policy clearly states that once a condition is accepted and the deductible is met, the condition is covered for the life of the pet.

Trupanion is the first Pet Insurance Company I've dealt with that pays for claims when all policy conditions are met.
I heard about Trupanion Pet Insurance through my Primary Veterinarian's Office. Before contacting Trupanion, I did research on Pet Insurance. I did not have a positive experience with a previous Pet Insurance Company. When I first contacted Trupanion, I talked to a very pleasant, and helpful receptionist. She asked me questions about my pets, and we discussed the coverage I needed. I provided a copy of my Veterinarian's orthopedic and wellness exam, and we agreed on a policy package. In addition, I received premium discounts for my two dogs, because they are certified Therapy Dogs. My dog, Jovie, had 3 episodes of random lameness, of short duration. I had Jovie covered with Trupanion for 18 months, with no claims. After the 3rd unexplained lameness, I took her to an Orthopedic Specialist to do a hind-end analysis. The Orthopedic Specialist suspected 'Osteochondritis Dissecans' in both ankles. He scheduled a CT scan, and the results were as predicted. The course of action was surgery on both hocks to remove debris and damage from OCD lesions. Bone marrow will be extracted to make stem cells, which will be injected to rejuvenate the hocks. There will be follow-up exams; PT; support wraps; and more since OCD is a progressive disease. After meeting my deductible, and providing Trupanion with all the required forms, they honored my policy!!! Trupanion is paying 90% of every claim pertaining to Jovie's OCD. I HIGHLY recommend Trupanion for Pet Insurance!

Huge rate hikes as your dog gets older
I had been a satisfied customer since 2013. The claims process was straightforward, the coverage was great, etc. My rates went up annually, which I expected, and the notices and FAQs said is based on the rising costs of veterinary care. Back in 2013 my monthly premium for two dogs was $63, with a $250 deductible for each dog. In 2019 I doubled my deductible to lower my monthly premium and keep it under $100/month. In 2020 I got a notice that my monthly premium was increasing by 30%, and this year I received a notice that my premiums were increasing another 50%. My monthly premium will now be $194, over 3x more than when I signed up—and I have a higher deductible. I’ve since learned that though they don’t come out and say it, they factor your pet’s age into their anniversary increases even if you signed them up when they were young. Once your dogs are seniors and likely have various health conditions, it is not easy to switch insurers because of their age and all of the conditions that would become “preexisting” with a new provider. So you’re stuck. If you’re shopping for pet insurance, there is at least one competitor to Healthy Paws that bases premiums on your pet’s age at the time you enroll and doesn’t do “birthday increases.” I only chose Healthy Paws because their misleading language suggested they were the same. After doing some research I’ve learned that there was actually a class action lawsuit against Healthy Paws over this issue, and Healthy Paws does base the increases on your pet’s age. Loyal customers who have paid premiums for many years on young, healthy dogs should not get stuck with thousands of dollars a year in premiums and high deductibles once their dogs age. They shouldn’t be forced to consider dropping coverage at exactly the time their dogs need it most. I really wish I had made a different choice back in 2013.

When a $1,000 deductible is really $1,300
Cheaper than most, but beware. The deductible is higher than posted because of the shady way they calculate it when submitting a claim. I had what I thought was a $1,000 deductible, but when I had $1,500 in vet bills. I only received roughly $200 back. I have 80% reimbursement so I expected $400 back which I calculated as I pay the first $1k and then I am reimbursed 80% of the remaining $500. The way they calculate that is misleading and borderline shady. Basically, with a $1,000 deductible and 80% reimbursement, you need almost $1,300 in expenses before they will pay anything out which is more of a $1,300 deductible. will say they are cheaper than most and the claims process was easy. I just wish they would calculate a deductible like most places do.

KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PAYING INTO!
Borderline a scam to get loving pet parent's hard earned money, while actually covering very little. PLEASE PLEASE read every fine print and ask questions! Do not assume anything. This company will not cover ANYTHING related to a pre-existing injury or illness to your dog. So for example, if your dog hurt their left leg 6 months before you got the insurance, then anything that happens to that leg AFTER is on you. They won't even cover prescriptions, if it pertains to that leg! Insane. What is the insurance good for??? Not to mention, good luck actually getting customer service on the phone in under 30 minutes. Terrible experience and $400 dollars down the drain. It's a shame to take advantage of people.
