Big dog can mean big bills

This is the first time I’ve had insurance for a pet. Every thing is bigger with a Great Dane. Nationwide helps ease the cost of keeping my baby healthy. Quick and easy claims with fast reimbursement. What’s not to love?

24 Hour Vet Helpline amazing with the most knowledgeable professional helpful veterinarians.

I want to share my heart and knowledge with others who love their dog as much as Bob and I love Trooper. Our 8 month old Maltese who weighs only 7 1/2 lbs is cute and he loves to explore with his nose putting things in his mouth. We are very dedicated pet owners. We have a very "puppy-proof home" because of this. June 11th Trooper chewed off a piece of exposed drywall while we were remodelling our upstairs bathroom resulting in a complete blockage of his airway. I was in another room at the time and I heard a panicked whine and then choking noises coming from Trooper. I quickly ran over to him. Trooper was making an effort to cough up the object. I watched him very closely and gave him some time to remove the object himself. He was coughing and he was breathing. He started struggling and showing signs of impaired breathing, wheezing, gagging, gasping for air, pacing and pawing at his mouth. His mouth was open and his tongue protruding. His eyes were panicking and he was starring at me. A look I will never forget. My heart stopped. I am a retired nurse and I have no doubt my nursing skills kicked in. I had to act and act fast. I panicked at first as anyone would seeing their dog choke. I then knew I had to act on my knowledge and not my emotions. I opened Trooper's mouth wide and could not see any object. I then gently pulled his tongue forward thinking that would dislodge the object. I could not see anything in his mouth causing the choking. It all went downhill from there. Trooper went limp in my arms and had a seizure. I grabbed his back legs and lowered his head. I used the palm of my hand to deliver 5 slaps between his shoulder blades and the object did not dislodge. I placed his back against my chest wrapping my hands around his soft belly, making a fist to create pressure inwards and upwards several times until a muddy piece of drywall popped out. Trooper was panting very fast. I placed him in front of a cool fan that we had in the room. His breathing improved. He vomited a foamy white substance and then he started barking. Please do yourself and your dog a favor and ensure you know how to perform in an emergency. The doggy Heimlich maneuver saved Trooper's life. And get your dog to the veterinarian as soon as possible. Knowing how to react if your dog is choking can save your dog's life! Hopefully most dog owners will never have to experience the sheer terror of watching their "best friend" choke. Trooper experienced a collapsed trachea, inflammation in his stomach as well as problems in the digestive tract. His coughing is completely gone. He is eating and drinking well and all systems working! He is playing with his toys, wagging his beautiful tail, and acting like a puppy. We love our little dude Trooper. He is getting lots of extra hugs and love. I cannot speak more highly of Nationwide's 24-hour Vet helpline. I initially talked to Kayla Williams, a Veterinary nurse. She was my first contact and took the majority of the history of Trooper's condition following this emergency incident. I asked to talk to a licensed veterinarian. She transferred me immediately to Dr. Holland. I was so frightened that I may have injured Trooper in the process of performing the Heimlich maneuver. She was so reassuring to me and told me that my quick thinking saved our puppy's life. She took the time to answer all my questions and concerns. She was awesome. She educated me so that I would know what to watch for and she suggested we get Trooper to our veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam and diagnostic testing. We live in a rural community. I want everyone to know how grateful I am for her dedication and thoroughness. She did not just do the obvious. She focused on me as well as Trooper. Trooper is a very special member of our family. Nationwide veterinarians are the best resource to ensure the health and well-being of your pets. Thank you again Nationwide for being "on our side." Kristie, Bob, and Trooper Hurley Jefferson, Iowa
