Healthy Paws was very responsive

Healthy Paws was very responsive, professional and helpful in settling the bill for a recent oral mass removal procedure for my 4 year old Border Collie.

Claim settled with no hassle

I submitted 3 receipts, one from my regular vet and two from the surgeon who performed my dog’s specialist consultation & pre-op & biopsy (benign!!) I waited for the biopsy results (would she need further treatment?) before submitting the claim online. I immediately got a response that my claims had been received. Within a week I received 3 payment checks. So simple and no back and forth needing more info from me or my vets. Thank you Healthy Paws for making the process so easy :)

I Do Not Recommend Healthy Paws

I insured both our dogs when they were puppies: one in 2014 and the other in 2016. The premiums began at a reasonable amount--our first dog started with a $31.96 monthly premium and that was with a $250 annual deductible and 90% reimbursement level. Our second dog started with a $39.03 monthly premium, a $100 annual deductible, and a 90% reimbursement level. I was happy to pay those amounts for the peace of mind and the fantastic coverage. We've had steady, but manageable rate increases every year. Fast forward to the last several years. For the policy period beginning in December, 2024, I had to increase both the dogs' deductibles to $500 in order to keep the monthly premiums at a somewhat manageable level. For the policy period beginning December, 2025, we were notified that our reimbursement level would be automatically reduced to 70% from the previous 90%. Apparently Healthy Paws implemented this age-based change last year. Our monthly premiums for this greatly reduced coverage are now $238.59 for our first dog and $200.28 for our second dog. Ouch. Just to put this in perspective, we have to pay out $500 for covered services for each dog before the policy begins to cover anything at all, and then that is only reimbursed at 70%. Will Healthy Paws drop our reimbursement percentage even further when future renewal anniversaries roll around? Who knows? The current monthly premium represents a whopping 646.527% increase from the original premium for our first dog and a 413.144% increase from the original premium for my second dog! During 2025, I had to appeal two denied claims that were for covered services. The denials were eventually reversed, but it was a lot of hassle to go through and a long delay for claims that should have been initially approved. I should add that I am grateful for coverage we've received for some expensive health issues through the years. For example, a splenectomy and several days in the vet hospital for one dog resulted in a bill that was over $9000. Last year, that same dog had surgery to remove some liver masses. But, I may no longer be able to afford the insurance after this year--especially considering the higher deductibles and lower reimbursement levels. Since my dogs at this stage in their lives both have what would be considered preexisting conditions by another insurer, shopping for a more affordable policy elsewhere isn't an option. We're between a rock and a hard place. To sum up: when we signed up for Healthy Paws, it offered great coverage at an affordable price. In the last few years, our rates have skyrocketed and our coverage has been reduced. I can no longer recommend Healthy Paws.

Practically doubling monthly premiums for their own profits

I’m so disappointed in this company and will be canceling my policy due to their outrageous increase in premiums. I’ve had pet insurance with them for 1-3 cats for more than a decade, and over that time they’ve been generally great, but in the last two years my monthly premiums have skyrocketed (from $94 to $124 in 2025, and as of February from $124 to ***$211***!!! Bear in mind, two of my three cats are ages 3 and 5, and the other is a healthy senior (9)). This unfathomable increase is not because I placed too many claims (I placed only one in the last few years) but because “As overall claim costs continued to rise, we periodically adjust our prices…These adjustments help us ensure the long-term sustainability of our program so we can continue covering veterinary costs without limits.” So…because more people are getting pet insurance and Healthy Paws has to reimburse customers for covered care…the sole reason insurance companies exist…my premium is practically doubling? Absolutely not. I’ve recommended Healthy Paws to dozens of people over the years. I rescue and foster for several LA-based dog and cat rescues and whenever I place an animal I refer them. As soon as I finish this, I’ll be emailing all of them and suggesting they look elsewhere. Healthy Paws has decided price-gouging and profit are more important than offering reasonable monthly premiums and keeping long-time customers. I hope they lose a lot of business. Shame on them. Edit: To their suggestion that I call them, I did, and they told me there's nothing they can do. I can either pay this new premium to stay covered at my current rate, decrease my coverage to lower my premium, or cancel. I'm canceling. This company is trash.
