Healthy Paws | Pet Insurance Review

Our New puppy required an overnight stay at the pet hospital which was quite expensive. We had bought insurance with Healthy Paws just a few weeks before the incident. There was no nonsense or making us jump through hoops. They paid the claim in a timely manner with updates along the way. Couldn’t be happier that we chose Healthy paws.

When my puppy needed surgery, Healthy Paws couldn't have made it easier. They took away the anxiety of a hefty bill by preapproving and prepaying for the procedure. And they followed up several times to make sure she was on the mend. It's a real relief to know they're in our corner.

Pet insurance is a must for an active hunter and hunt test performer. Healthy Paws has come through in a timely manner on reimbursements for injury, surgery, and cancer claims. Wouldn’t be without it.

It's been a rollercoaster of stress and emotions this week. Wednesday was Emma's birthday, and the worst day of three days of pain. Started out at her vet, took xrays and stomach was incredibly huge and distended. She sent us to a specialist for ultrasound. That completed, they suspected cancer. Adenocarcinoma or in the duodenal area. We were devastated and Emma looked awful, couldn't stand and in tremendous pain. They gave her pain meds, Cerenia and sent her home with us for surgery the next morning. Next morning, surgeon also thought cancer or mass based on image from the ultrasound. But she was too unstable for surgery and had to get her electrolytes and hydration better. Next morning just prior to surgery, the surgeon calls and says she's alert, playful, and stomach no longer distended. Seemed like a different dog. We opted to hold off on surgery and repeat ultrasound for comparison. That ultrasound was a much better view; the stomach was no longer blocking images of her organs and we could clearly see necrotizing pancreatitis, NOT cancer, but still very serious. Completely changed treatment plan and avoided surgery, literally at the last minute. She still had aggressive treatments and blood transfusion, but came out of it great. Completely scarey experience and it came out of nowhere! They literally told us it could gave been one fatty meal or something she got into. We will make some dietary and medication changes and hopefully prevent any further recurrences. Knowing we had pet insurance at a time like this wad a HUGE relief; one less thing to worry about. Within a day of submitting her claim, Healthy Paws reached out to me to ask how she was doing and to give her a hug. Not your typical insurance company! I have just been notified that my rate will increase by 36% compared to last year (113% increase since we started with Healthy Paws). This is an abusive rate hike as, due to pre-existing conditions, I am unlikely to find similar coverage from a different insurer. After my rate hike last year, Healthy Paws stated they would provide documentation showing an increase in more frequent and more expensive claims. I spent months following up on this promise to which Healthy Paws kept apologizing for the delay in providing documentation, but in the end, no documentation was ever provided. This year there is an even steeper rate increase. They are citing the same reasons as last year, but again not providing any documentation. My experience with filing claims with Healthy Paws has always been a positive one, but the transparency of these rate hikes is extremely disappointing, especially as others in my community aren’t seeing the same rate hikes with their insurance companies. If I’m able to find another insurance company that will cover pre-existing conditions, I will certainly be looking to switch.
