A Bad Year for Ani
My coton de tulear rescue, Ani, has been insured from birth. She is extremely health, but this year she poisoned herself twice with amanita pantherina, an extremely dangerous hallucinogenic mushroom. She became deathly ill in the middle of the night and the vet and I sat up with her til her neurological symptoms cleared. The vet could not authoritatively diagnose her illness at the time, but a week or so later she went for another panther cap on her daily walk. Now I keep her muzzled when out of the house. However, she later ingested a potentially lethal dose of 5 HTP (digging it out of a visitor's purse), which causes a serotonin overload in dogs. Followed up with an infected/ruptured anal gland. While she was under anesthesia, the vet checked her dentition and found four loose/infected teeth that needed extraction.
