How to Save Money at Sawyer Lake Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We adopted a kitten from the cat rescue they have on site. They had a lot of kittens! (About 30) The adoption coordinator was very nice and he let us spend time with all the cats and kittens to see which one was the best fit for our family. The adoption fee was $400. But it seemed reasonable considering that included spay/neuter, all shots, and microchipping. Plus it's a vet, so we felt confident that we were inviting a healthy cat into our house. Thank you Lake Sawyer Veterinary, for providing the cat rescue service. We'll be spreading the word to anyone looking for a cat or kitten.

BE AWARE!!!!! 6yrs ago we had our elderly dog put to sleep at Lake Sawyer and the experience was so caring; so when we needed to put our last pet down we scheduled here again. Ms White (Vet & Owner) walked into the room and said “I don’t make money off your dogs but I can put them to sleep”? (We do not keep a regular vet). The staff was clearly appalled by her and did their best to be kind in addition to apologizing for the appointment taking 2.5 HOURS. It was a hard enough day putting out 21yr old loved one to sleep but she and her belligerent mouth made it absolutely AWEFUL!!

I scheduled an appointment with them for 5:30. They asked me to inform them if i was going to be late so that we could reschedule since they closed at 6. I arrived at 5:20 and had my paperwork filled out by 5:25. They then sat me in the exam room for almost a half hour and finally a nurse came in around 6:00 to look at my dog. They gave me a long lasting flea pill to clear up his flea infestation and for the hotspot above his tail they gave me an antibiotic spray with alcohol in it. This spray stings when i put it on his hotspot and dries his skin out, irritating it further. They also gave me a cone for his head that was sized too small. When i mentioned this the nurse told me i was wrong and started shoving it over his head anyway. When i told them that i didnt need them to put it on and I would do so when i got home, she said "no i've got it" and tied the cone very tightly around the base of his head. I do not recommend this vet and I will not be going there again. Do yourself a favor and find a vet that cares about the animals that they are treating and is willing to work with you as a client and give medication that actually helps the issue rather than exacerbating it. Would give 0 starts if i could.

Unfortunately this was the only place available at the time!!! Very very Unorganized, Jan(the vet) was yelling at her staff about billing, unprofessional, that should be done in private not loud enough for the whole building to hear! Apparently because we had never been there before & didn't have a Chart # she wouldn't even come in our room until her staff got it fixed! Waited for over an hr for the Vet to come in & we had an appointment. We felt we needed an xray on our dogs leg, instead she did expensive blood work(@their in- house lab) which nobody that was there even knew how to run the machine(she said "Don't worry we have a cheat-sheet!!!). Took forever & we finally just ask them to email us the results as we had been sitting there for hrs with our dog in pain! We still don't know what is wrong with his leg so we will need to take him his regular vet on Monday to get the proper care. Seems the vet was just looking for ways to charge more $$$!
