How to Save Money at Valley Veterinary Emergency & Referral Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Unfortunately we have been here a number of times in the last two months with our pets, culminating in our beloved golden, Harper, having to be let go. During all of our visits, the doctors and the staff have been AMAZING both to us and to our animals. They have been so caring, compassionate, forthright, and upfront with us. I cannot recommend them enough. Thank you to their staff.

We recently had to put our Cane Corso to rest. He had aspiration pneumonia and possible early kidney disease. It was a very traumatic day due to the quick progression of his sickness. But the team there was very caring and the doctor was great at explaining things in Layman’s terms. Though I understood a lot of it being in Nursing, it really helped. The only reason I take off two stars is because of price and no payment plans. They offered 2 credit lenders or to pay up front. I know they need their money and services can be expensive. But it felt like we either had the option to pay $7k to “maybe” save our pup, or pay to put him down. My options were: pay $7k right here and now for us to even keep your pet here, or pay more on top of the $700+ you’ve already spent in diagnostics to euthanize your dog. They did take him back immediately when they saw the condition he was in (which rapidly progressed within hours). With the blood work, imaging, exam, supportive care while we were there, and the euthanasia, we still spent $1k. They were very empathetic through the euthanasia process though. They provided us with a keepsake clay pawprint (pictured) and put our pup in a biodegradable bag (which I don’t think they charged for either of those things) and helped us take him to the car. We buried him at home with the keepsake on display in his memorial (also pictured). All in all, it was a traumatic day, but they seemed to really care for us and gave us plenty of time to make our decisions (which was really only one, at the cost they were quoting with a less than optimistic recovery). They gave us time to say goodbye too and made him comfortable with a soft blanket (his favorite). Also a picture of my boy for reference.

My dog was diagnosed with CHF back in May. We just moved here in July from Massachusetts. We finally got an appointment with a cardiologist in August at CVCA, but we had to visit this hospital once in August, and again this past weekend. Unfortunately, this past weekend, my boy Jaxon was in the end stage of the disease, and I had to make the tough decision to let him go. He was unable to breathe on his own due to the advanced CHF, and therefore inside an oxygen cage. They brought me out back to spend time with him before, and also hold him in the oxygen cage while they performed the injections. Afterward, I was able to hold him in a closed room for as long as I needed. I even requested some of his fur and they honored the request, which I was extremely grateful for. Dr. Anna was empathetic and communicative through it all. We miss our boy more than anything.

Had to bring our senior cat, Mamacita, in twice in a matter of a couple days as she suddenly stopped eating and drinking and was lethargic. The front desk on Saturday was kind and patient, especially given how busy they were. Dr. Lisa Reese saw to Mama both times we came in and she was excellent. She was compassionate and knowledgeable, really doing her all to help our little lady. Dr. Reese recommended a specialist and called ahead to make sure they could get Mama in the same day so we wouldn’t have to make a lengthy drive for nothing. Despite having to go to a specialist, Dr. Reese provided clear recommendations for the short and long-term to help with pain management due to arthritis. Mama is now back to her normal self and we are so thankful for the expertise and support provided at Valley. Thank you all so much!

Before I take my dog Tito to a veterinarian office/veterinarian hospital, I research and read reviews. He is the most important to me, so it matters where I take him. It was 1am, and my dog was excessively licking his private area. It was so red and swollen, I could tell he was really bothered, he needed to be seen. And this was the only place open. I’m going to be completely honest, I was hesitant to take my dog here because some of the horrible reviews I read. But it was my only option. I called and she said to come on in, there is very little wait time. So I checked in with a nice front desk receptionist and told her I was a new client. Within 5 minutes a cheerful nurse came up and spoke with me about Tito’s symptoms and took him back in the office to see the doctor. I waited in the front lobby, which was nice, big, and very clean. They had a big screen TV with the new Little Mermaid playing. They also had a coffee station with lots of varieties of really good coffee/tea/hot chocolate, etc. Within 30-45 minutes the receptionist told me Tito was finishing up with the doctor and took me to a private clean room. Five minutes later Dr. Wolff came in, and told me she took care of Tito, she prescribed medication and sent us on our way. She was exceptionally professional and nice. She was honest, and didn’t push things on me at all. Quite the opposite actually. She took her time and answered all my questions. Now it was $300, but it IS a veterinary hospital and I expected that. But for my Tito, I would pay anything. He is that worth it. Thank you guys for taking such sweet care of my Tito. He seems to be doing so much better already. I have a friend who sadly recently had to put his dog down. But he said he had nothing but great things to say about this as well. Don’t believe everything you read. This place really has some good hearted people who love animals.
