How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This clinic is absolutely terrible. I had an appointment today, and not at any point did the vet come out to talk to me about my concerns, or even introduce themselves. If you want a clinic where you have absolutely zero interactions with the vet you’re making the appointment with, and you want to feel as though you’re just a number, this is the clinic for you. If you want to have an active role in your pets care, and actually meet your Vet, look elsewhere!

Communication is pretty awful. You’ll be having to wait weeks for them to approve of a prescription. If your dogs needs prescriptions I highly suggest you don’t go as you’ll run out and it will be impossible to get a hold of them and even longer for approval to the dog pharmacy.

I was a little put off at first when it was my first time there and I didn't get to meet the veterinarian. I did get to speak to her on the phone after she examined my cat which made me feel better about Banfield. They also have a variety of plans you can purchase which helps with costs of dental cleaning etc. Their prices are discounted so this is working out much better than my former insurance which would consider something pre-existing and not pay at all and I would walk out having to pay $650 before I walked out. I would recommend.

First of all, the woman who works at the front desk with long hair and a tattoo on her right arm is extremely cold and doesn't even smile. I usually go to Annadele location, but I chose this place because it is closer to my home. I always like to write good things, but yesterday was a disappointment for me. The front support staff and doctors at Annadele are very friendly. But vienna location big disappointment. My cat had surgery yesterday, I left at 7.30 in the morning. I went back to pick it up around 1 o'clock. When we returned home, my cat tried to remove the cone in her neck with the effect of anesthesia. These are things that can happen, there is no problem with that. Later I noticed that his wound had opened and there was some blood. I was scared and immediately called the hospital. They asked me to take a picture first instead of going there. I sent an official email. When I called afterwards, the front desk employee made me wait on the phone for exactly 8 minutes and I stated that it was Emergency. Afterwards, she told me on the phone that the doctor was busy today and I didn't even need to go. What do you mean the doctor is busy?!! The doctor may be busy, but my cat is his patient. He can spare at least 5 seconds. The way they communicate with someone who is worried is so wrong!!! The doctor is very busy, it is unacceptable to say come tomorrow!!!! Because my cat had surgery!!!! Then I went to the Vienna location again the same day and I was very angry because they had an attitude on the phone as they didn't want to accept us. This is about my cat's health!!! When I went to the Banfield hospital vienna location I swear I was ready to fight because their attitude on the phone was totally selfish. Doctor is busy today!!! Then they had to take care of my cat. Then they asked me everything was fine but if I wanted the vaccine to avoid infection, and after I said I would, I paid an extra $65. If there was such a vaccine, why was it said "everything is fine but if you want the vaccine $65" when I went again?????? The woman who had contacted me last before I left was the doctor or assistant, and she was at least more friendly than the others. Total disappointment. Customer relations are very poor.

Communication is HORRIBLE. Upsell attempts are made at every single appointment (multiple times during the appointments) and make you feel as though you don’t care about your pet if you don’t spend the thousands they say you should… My 14-year old senior dog was dropped off per instructions at 745am for a dental cleaning. He wasn't allowed to have any food after midnight the day before and due to anesthesia, they weren't giving him any water prior to his service. I received the first call from the hospital at 1130am where they told me about a few things they found in an initial blood test and asked if I wanted to run extra tests that cost extra $$. Then they said the vet said he needed about $1K-$2K worth of extractions (his teeth exam or xrays hadn't even started) and if I wanted to approve that amount. I said no, call me during the xrays and let me know what is absolutely necessary. I get another call around 1pm from the vet and she tells me one of his numbers is abnormally high and could cause complications but asks if I wanted to run more tests to see if they should go forward with the anesthesia and cleaning (this is now 5 hours after drop off). She suggested they run two tests, one of which is included in his insurance plan, but when I said to run that test, she said we can do that but it won’t tell us much (but then why did she suggest it?) All the while, I can hear my dog barking constantly in the background likely because he's thirsty and hungry. 2 hours later, I still hadn't heard back so I tried calling and on the 10th try, someone finally picked up. She puts me on hold and comes back to tell me they JUST put him under so I should hear back within 15 minutes. 45 minutes later I finally receive a call back and they are suggesting almost $2500 worth of extractions and additional medicines and such which of course, cost more. Finally I said I just want my dog awake so I can pick him up and they said I can pick him up at 530pm- almost 10 hours later. Went to pick up my dog and after standing there for almost 10 minutes, one of the team members at the front desk asks “have you been helped?” though she hadn’t been assisting anyone. I told them I was picking my dog and she goes “how will you be paying?” before saying anything else. When I asked her to run through the charges again she goes “you want me to list out the charges for you? Ok….”. To top it all off- my dog reeked of urine though he was bathed two days ago.
