How to Save Money at Texas Veterinary Hospitals

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very kind and caring a little bit pricey but worth every penny ! They took care of my cat with cancer and were there when we had to unfortunately let her go, Dr Mixon and his team did an amazing job at explaining everything along the way and didn't rush us when it was time to decide if euthanasia was the best option. My cat had all the love, care, and respect she deserved in her final moments. Thank you so much for being there and making a hard decision a little bit easier for us! Thank you for always making room for us when We had an emergency.

Dr. Mixon has been caring for our family pups for over 20 years. He is so wonderful with each of them. He is caring and genuine. He is conservative in his treatments, no frivolous blood tests or unnecessary x-rays. He is an excellent veterinarian and I recommend him to everyone I know.

Let's start by saying that Alex is TERRIBLE at customer service. He was extremely rude and argued my concern from the beginning. I asked him for his manager, and he said he couldn't say and did not know the manager's office hours. It's ridiculous!! I encourage EVERYONE to review the well check report to make sure it's personalized to your pet! I took my dog in for a tummy ache and walked out with a $600 bill. When I got home, I reviewed the documents and realized they provided me with falsified documentation. They checked off all the boxes stating that my dog was healthy. I informed the tech and the veterinarian that I was also concerned with my dog's teeth due to the tartar around each tooth. I was not given any medication or recommendations to address the problem. However, on the report it stated that her teeth were white and healthy with no signs of plaque. I understand my initial concern was my dog's tummy ache, but how would they not address any other concerns? You would think that's what a $25 well check is for? WRONG, they provide you with a generic typed-out form. Wouldn't that cause you to question the staff and services provided to your pet? I would highly recommend visiting another practice.

From a customer standpoint, Lily and myself had a great experience. After losing my old buddy in August last year, I recently decided to foster. I wanted to find a go-to, reliable and affordable vet with as much compassion for dogs as I have. I able to get her in quickly, and out faster with tail wags the whole time. Your staff were all clearly pet lovers who seemed to truly enjoy being there. I recently moved to this area, and just like anyone else, price tag was also a factor. Very affordable and comparable, if not better in price to so called 'low-cost' vets. Great facilities, convenient location, and friendly staff. No doubt I will recommend you to anyone asking. Knowing I now have a reliable, affordable and compassionate vet, it's one less thing I need to worry about in my journey in fostering 'Fido(s)'. I hope my review helps anyone else looking for a good vet.

Brought in my 8 year old cat recently because he was having some digestive issues. Dr. Mixon and his staff were great, they asked a ton of questions and took great care of him! Also let me know that he's a bit over weight and gave me a good plan on how to get it under control. Will definitely be going back should I need any other services for my cat and dog.
