How to Save Money at Affordable Pet Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my cat zombie 2 years ago for stomatitis and for teeth extractions, the plan was to have all teeth removed to do it all at once. I paid over 1600 and they only did have of the extractions because they did not have enough anesthesia to keep going to remove the rest. I did not get a refund for the teeth they did not remove because they wanted to see him again to remove the rest . I waited a couple of months because I did not want to put him under again so soon. When I made the appointment again they set it up. But I needed to have him seen sooner and they didn’t have any available dates, so I took him to the vca hospital and they gave him a steroid and antibiotics. When the appointment came around for the affordable pet care place I decided he was fine and didn’t want to have him put under again because of what happened last time. I did not have the same faith anymore in their work. They called me back only to let me know they wold be charging me a missed appointment fee and if I wanted to set up future appointments I would need to pay an appointment fee first before they wld see me. I explained I had to take him to another hospital because they led not see him sooner because of the infection and what happened the first time. All of a sudden none of the notes were there about the anesthesia running out or the credit for the teeth they did not remove, yet I have the voicemail of the dr explaining what happened. As of 3 weeks ago he was still having the same problems I finally found a good veterinarian at Alamo feline health center! They corrected the issue and they have all the equipment needed to perform these procedures plus it was more affordable and they have no appointment fees. I highly recommend Alamo feline health center. I had very negative and rude customer service experience with affordable pet care. I was very disappointed.

I felt comfortable here from the moment I walked in -- they manage to be professional but homey at the same time. All the staff were really kind and took time to make sure my dog felt comfortable and that I had plenty of information to make decisions. After being told my dog needed major, expensive, and dangerous surgery by VCA Becker animal hospital, this vet quickly ascertained that, no, antibiotics and hot compresses would be sufficient -- and she was right. So glad my dog is well and we didn't subject her to unnecessary surgery.

Unfortunately I lost my cat after 18 wonderful years 😔 unfortunately I misdiagnosed her illness. Affordable pet Care did everything they could within reasonable expectations and my budget. I am most grateful for the empathy me and my cat got well under their care. Been 2 weeks since I lost her and sometimes I still expect to see her in a corner under the bed in the closet

Since they’ve changed to Pet Care they’ve gone down hill as now they’re just a money hungry clinic. Today I got charged $20 for missing the late show windows by 2 minutes. I used to make the drive here from my side of town because I liked the care but I will be finding another vet near us after this.
