How to Save Money at MissionVet Specialty & Emergency

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We were referred to Mission Vet by my dog's primary Veterinary practice after it was discovered that she had severe kidney failure. Once at Mission Vet, she was seen by multiple doctors who gave us the same, heartbreaking conclusion: she had end-stage kidney disease and most likely did not have long to live. After spending 4 days at Mission Vet, she was discharged home to us to continue palliative care. The doctors and the technicians all did an amazing job taking care of her, and allowing us to visit my sweet girl during her stay. They even provided her some anxiety medication when I was worried about her staying overnight during a big storm and assured me she was fine as she could be and sleeping peacefully. Although I wish more could have been done to save my baby, they helped me as best as they could to get her feeling semi-okay. They were very caring and understanding of what we were going through and even called her a sweet baby. I am sad to say that my sweet girl, Calcifer, did not live long after being discharged but she did receive the best care possible here. The price was reasonable for her 4 day stay and all the procedures performed. Thank you, Mission Vet. For taking care of my sweet pea, Calcifer.

Dog Training Elite San Antonio

I brought in my German Shepherd due to a distended abdomen and concern about internal bleeding after a fall. We were rapidly triaged and the amazing team of techs and Dr. Leonard began working to stabilize my dog. I was communicated with frequently, and although there was unfortunately no surgeon available at Mission the team facilitated a transfer to another hospital and made the process as seamless as possible. Upon arriving at the second hospital my dog was in surgery within thirty minutes. I have no doubt that if it weren’t for the care received at Mission that I would be missing a very important part of my pack today.

My dog dislocated her hip by jumping up and discussing the property line with the possum on the fence. She fell in an odd way. Freak accident. I took her to see the vet, and after taking x-rays, saw the dislocated hip. The vet recommended that we take her to Mission Vet. We loaded her up in the car and off we went. From being greeted, to meeting with the vet tech, then meeting the vet, everyone was so kind! They all had my dog's best interest in mind. It was decided that she would have surgery to fix her hip. I spoke to the surgeon before surgery and the vet tech during and after the surgery. I was encouraged to call as often as I wanted to check on my girl. I was able to pick up my girl the day after surgery, on a Friday. On Monday, I was contacted by Mission Vet to get an update on how my dog was doing. I was very impressed by the care Ms.D received. It was an expense that I had not expected. The vet was very respectful of the fact that it was a hard decision. She gave me time to make the decision to put her down or go forward with the surgery. Because this was a freak accident and she was still young, I chose the surgery. Mission Vet put my pet first. I am very grateful for the compassion and care given to me and my dog.

My family found a puppy that had its legs tied together with zip ties and starving on the side of the road Thanksgiving night. We took Lookout to Mission in the middle of the night and they were able to help us in every way. They kept Lookout through the night and got the circulation back in his legs and helped clean up his wounds. When Dr. Gio let him walk out to us the next morning our hearts melted. Thank you so much Mission vet for helping us save this sweet puppy. ❤️ Original photos are graphic.

I will to be short but bottomline, they did an amazing job with saving my new family member. I had 3 huskies that recently passed away within the last year which brought me lots of heartache. My bf and my daughter wanted to surprise me with a husky someone was giving away. This person was slick because they didn’t know they were going to bring me sick dog that probably wouldn’t have made it in the next couple of days. She couldn’t walk or hold herself up, wasn’t eating, she was lethargic, skinny, dirty, smelled real bad. This person had her wrapped up in blanket so they wouldn’t be able to see how bad she was. She was sleeping or so they thought so they were just letting her rest. Well after seeing her I took her straight to the ER and I am glad I did. They took good care of her. She needed fluids so an IV was set in, she needed to eat but wouldn’t so they gave her a feeding tube. They did lab work and everything came back normal except her white blood cells. After 3 days in the er she became a new husky. Her final lab work did eventually come back Nyla having Parvo but with help from the staff she made it. She was eating and walking and alert. I am so happy they saved her. Some may have seen this pet ER a bit pricy, but one, if you love your babies like your child you will do your best to get the medical help they need, two, they do work with you with estimated cost as they go. Overall my Nyla and I are happy. I think GOD meant for us to find each other. She’s doing so much better now and so full of energy. Thank you everyone for taking such good care of LALA who is now Nyla Iris.
