How to Save Money at Wilcrest Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am very pleased and satisfied with the care from Wilcrest Animal Hospital. My 3 year old sphynx has been seen several times for blood in the urine. He has been quickly diagnosed with stones. The veterinarian only requests required tests and treatments. They are kind, patient and friendly. Not once have I felt pressured. They let me decide to proceed when I’m ready. I am very grateful to have them.

The staff here are empathetic, which is the bare minimum. I showed them these videos of my cat with pale gums, lethargy, difficulty breathing, coughing up blood. We were told it was not an emergency situation. Although we came in before closing, we were left in the waiting room, forcing us to have an after-hours visit The actual doctor we saw was insistent on getting both a radiograph and bloodwork, $375 each. My family comes from the medical field, so we know a radiograph would not have been useful. The doctor also seemed in a rush to leave, and he neither explained the prognosis for my cat nor answered our questions on palliative care. We were initially presented with someone else’s itemized bill, showing this clinic’s inattention to detail. We were also not initially presented with my cat’s bloodwork— I had to call for them to email it to me. My contact details were not verified before being put into the system. We were told the antibiotics should be ready by Monday, but they weren’t ready until even after my cat died the next day.

Paulina and Dr. Elorriaga were so wonderful! They accommodated for me to bring in my cat on such short notice on the weekend when this isn’t even the vet clinic I usually go to and they still showed him and myself so much patience, grace and tenderness which is so important to me. Highly recommend!

All I can say is the Wilcrest Animal Hospital Staff, nurses and doctor is amazing, , I wish I found him sooner - Incredibly talented doctor/staff, , and they treat your pet as if he or she was there own. I have never been in such a place where they care and love your animals so much.. My case was a bit difficult- my kitten (Miss Zelda) whom we found on the side of the road had a herniated diaphragm which mean's , her intestines was in her chest and her breathing was limited (Like breathing through a straw ). Most doctors wouldn’t even touch her due to no experience - this doctor had never Perform surgery like this either , but he took the time to do research and talk to his professional colleagues, and he came back with a the best and worst case scenarios he could in one day That in itself is amazing . Our little girl went in the next day and doctor performed- surgery - She wasn’t even out of surgery two hours and she already looked and felt 100% better. She was eating before we left and she even came home that day.. As of today, Miss Zelda’s living life to her fullest thanks to the doctor and his staff. I can’t ever think the doctor and his staff enough for what they did to help Miss Zelda. Because of them she can be the little kitten she was meant to be!!! Love you guys !!!

This place is incredible. They literally saved and extended my 16 year old dog’s life. I had visited multiple veterinary clinics that couldn’t help her, and this was my last hope to get her relief from the arthritis issues she was struggling with. The team here stepped up, took their time, and actually made a difference. Highly recommend, they truly care.
