How to Save Money at VEG ER for Pets

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my cat, Gemini, here when he was in heart failure and I was shocked at the level of urgency the whole team took to care for him ASAP. They really care here. I had to make a tough decision to put him down or help him recover from the episode even though he may only have 6-18 months. They broke the news to me with so much compassion and were honest but also let me make the decision on my own. 2 other vets gave me the same 6-18 month prognosis. I’m happy to say he’s officially made it over 6 months since taking him to VEG! I’m beyond grateful to the team for playing a huge part in his recovery, giving him a longer life, and giving me more time with him. He’s still doing great! Writing a review is the absolute least I could do. I will say their entire business model and set up is also really great, so definitely check them out.

The best ER/vet experience I’ve ever had. I was extremely worried about my dog, and from the moment we arrived the staff was quick, calm, and incredibly comforting. They allowed me to stay with her the entire time — standing right next to her and comforting her throughout treatment — which made a huge difference. The team was very knowledgeable and walked me through everything step by step, explaining what they were seeing and what the plan was. They were also very upfront and transparent about pricing, which I truly appreciated. I happily paid my bill knowing I got to see the care being provided and didn’t have to sit alone in a waiting room worrying. I’m so grateful for their professionalism, compassion, and transparency.

Had a scary experience with our 8 year old dog who had been vomiting for over a day. Our regular vet advised to bring him here, since the main vet was gone. The entire team was beyond amazing, keeping us calm in a stressful situation, ensuring our Zeus was comfortable, and explaining everything thoroughly. He had to be admitted for observation, and determine if surgery was necessary (thank goodness it wasn't). They stayed in contact with constant updates, even in the middle of the night. He got released today, and will ensure if my puppies ever need emergency assistance, this is where we go. The entire stressful situation was just made easier with the amazing team here. Thank you SO much for everything! Highly recommend for any and all pet needs, love and care is what they are about here!

I took my Shih Tzu in for a possible eye infection. I was greeted by a staff member at the door and we went straight into the exam room where we received immediate attention. The staff were friendly and compassionate towards my dog. The doctor explained what tests were required and she clearly explained the diagnosis and the treatment process. I was very impressed with the professionalism of the staff and the treatment my pet received. Of course the cost is a bit steep but that is something that comes with animal emergency care. Overall, I highly recommend VEG for emergency pet care.

I honestly cannot say enough good things about my experience last night at the emergency vet for my daughter’s dog. I called and they told me to come in right away as soon as I got there, I was brought to the bag with no hesitation. The doctor immediately came over and asked questions and made me feel more comfortable, right. Once we started the whole process of why we went, the nurses were incredible. Not only were they comforting to my dog, but making me feel better as well. It was like watching a well-balanced orchestra and everyone was just working so well together and I would recommend this place hands-down to anyone who is in need of emergency vet.
