How to Save Money at Dexter and Evie Veterinary Clinic + Urgent Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Everyone at Dexter and Evie from Jill to Dr. Lam was just wonderful! Lost my mind over the cutest puppy you'll ever meet last weekend and adopted my little Oliver and needed to establish a vet relationship for him. Through a Facebook referral I found just the right fit! They are so kind, pet and people-oriented there and the pricing is very reasonable too! They were thorough and professional, but also warm and caring. Very happy I tried them out! I think Oliver is in good hands!

We recently decided to switch vets and had such a wonderful experience at Dexter and Evie. We brought in all three of our large dogs at the same time (which is no easy feat) and the entire staff was welcoming, helpful and accommodating. I loved that Nurse Harley and Dr. Tran immediately sat on the floor with our dogs and made them feel comfortable. They clearly explained pricing and took the time to answer all my questions. We’re so glad to have found such an awesome veterinary team! Thank you guys!!

I’ve had an amazing experience with this clinic. The nurses and doctor were wonderful — they made both my family and our dog feel completely comfortable. My dog is very big and can be aggressive at times, but they were always patient, understanding, and incredibly helpful. On surgery day I was extremely nervous, but they took the time to answer every one of my questions and really helped calm my worries. In the days after surgery, I email them daily with pictures to make sure he is healing okay (he’s my baby!), and they always respond quickly with reassurance and clear updates. Overall, they have been absolutely fantastic and have truly exceeded all of my expectations. I’m so grateful for the care they’ve given my dog and the peace of mind they’ve given me. Highly recommend!

I’m new to the area and had an urgent issue with one of my cats—thankfully, this clinic was able to see him the same day. That positive experience led me to book appointments for my other cat and my dog, and they were seen just a few days later. From the start, the entire team has been incredibly kind, compassionate, and thorough. They truly care about my pets and have taken the time to make sure I feel informed and supported every step of the way. One thing that really stands out is how transparent they are with their pricing—there are no surprises or hidden fees. In the past, I’ve dealt with clinics that kept costs vague or required a second visit just to get a quote, so this level of honesty is a huge relief. I feel lucky to have found such a trustworthy and caring veterinary team so quickly. Highly recommend!

I am beyond thrilled with my experience at Dexter & Evie Veterinary! I took my 9.5-year-old terrier for a dental cleaning with extractions and mass removal, and it went perfectly! After visiting five other veterinary offices, I knew I had found the right place as soon as we walked in. The clinic was spotless, and the staff greeted us with such warmth and care. Dr. Kim Tran is absolutely wonderful—she took the time to answer all of my questions, thoroughly explained the procedure, and gave me a clear estimate. My dog was dropped off at 8 am and was ready by 2 pm, looking great! We came back two weeks later for staple removal, and everything was healing perfectly. The best part? They performed a dental cleaning with 5 extractions and mass removal without charging an arm and a leg! It’s such an affordable place that truly cares about our fur babies. I will absolutely continue making the hour-long drive to Dexter & Evie for all of my pet’s needs. I can't recommend them enough!
