How to Save Money at Crossroads Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been calling to find a vet in the area and it has been excruciatingly painful speaking with staff trying to get a quote. I just called this office and spoke with Jared and he was extremely pleasant and polite and it was the easiest quote that I’ve gotten from any clinic I think ever so I really really appreciate that and because of that I will probably go into this clinic. I’m looking forward to my experience here and again. I just want to thank Jared for making that process easy for me especially when a lot of other clinics make it extremely hard.

Dr. McIntyre and the Crossroads staff are amazing. We have been taking our pets to Dr. McIntyre and staff since the clinic opened at its original location in 1994 when there was a Randall's at FM529/Highway 6. Compassionate care, personal interest and a team we completely trust.

I've taken my pets to Crossroads for the last twenty years. They are always friendly and professional. The staff is fantastic, they are very good with dogs and cats alike. They diagnosed my dog with epilepsy and helped us understand the condition and provided an effective treatment plan. These people are truly compassionate. I highly recommend them for your pets!

I want to make this review very clear, this is a practice my family has been going to for over 20 years, and this is not against Crossroads Animal Clinic. The techs have always been amazing, My family misses the doctors who retired that helped our family pets for so many years, but we are happy they get to enjoy this stage of life. THIS REVIEW IS STRICTLY FOR DR. MUNDO. She is overall rude, and dismissive of her patients. I brought my cat in for treatment for a depro medrol shot which I have discussed many times with many vets that I understand the risks of a steroidal injection but unfortunately it’s the only thing we could find that works for her. Dr. Mundo had come in and said “yeah, im not doing depro” no conversation, no explaination, nothing. I explained everything and she just made a face like I was an idiot and said she was giving her a pill, I explained I was willing to try it but I doubt it would work. The pills did not work. I called back later after she had another issue with the mystery allergy, but I was insistent I didn’t want to see Dr. Mundo after how I was treated last visit. DR. SHELBY WAS AMAZING and helped us greatly with my cats treatment, he was patient and listened to what I had to say about the allergy issues my cat has been having. He offered to do the depro shot as long as we got her bloodwork done, which of course came back perfect health. I explained to Dr. Shelby that we would likely need to do another within 30 days because she’s been off the depro for so long, and that typically the shots need more frequency during summer, and in winter and fall it’s less frequent. He said he understands and that I just need to call when needed. The other day (7/31/25)I called to make a tech appointment for a depro shot, and Dr. Mundo sticks her nose in something that is not her business as I made it clear for the second time when I made the appointment that I don’t work with Dr. Mundo, and instructs the tech to cancel the appointment. I had already made it extremely clear that I do not want to work with Dr. Mundo prior in several conversations. Moral of the story/ TLDR: Dr. Mundo is stuck up, does not care what the pet parents think, and is rude and dismissive, bad practice. Do not give her business. Dr. Shelby did amazing and will be working with him in the future.
