How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dropped off 3 dogs at 8 am one for dental cleaning and 2 for vaccine shots. My dogs have been caged for 9 hours because they kept accepting other walk in dogs. It is a sub humane practice. The vet was nice and apologetic but again such mismanagement is not acceptable!

This is honestly the worst banfield I have ever taken my dogs to. The only thing good about it that the staff is nice to work with. Their organization is terrible and they take way too long to complete visits that should only take an 1 hour. They can't read my pets records apparently, because I have had multiple visits where they did not complete services that are due soon. I highly recommend you go to a different banfield.

Update: DR called and apologized about the miscommunication. I realize she sees a lot of dogs everyday. I have been a member off and on with Banfield over the years and have had no problems, until COVID. It is not what it was pre-covid. I understand why, it's a third party vendor instead of direct vet care. There's a middle man taking a cut off the plate and I bet they are having a hard time keeping veterinarians. My dog came in on February 14th for her routine exam they realized she had high cholesterol put her on a special diet. They tell me we need to come back in 2 weeks and recheck her blood work to see where her cholesterol is to see if the diet is helping. I bring her in for a drop off visit and they do not check her blood work. Why, you say. Because they need to check her after 60 days! Then why was I supposed to bring her back in 2 weeks? I wasted time bringing her up here and I wasted the doctor's time. In the summer of 2023 , my dog had to get some kidney stones removed. This location had to call in a third-party doctor to do the surgery for kidney stones and I would have to take her to another location. No thank you! So I ended up taking her to another doctor that I know in Plano, by the way it was cheaper than bringing her to Banfield for the same surgery and I'm a Banfield member. I went ahead and had that other doctor do her vaccinations. They did a 3-year rabies shot. Fast forward to 2024. I schedule her wellness visit with Banfield, they tell me they can't find her in the system because I had her medical record sent to another doctor for her kidney stone surgery so they thought I just checked out even though I've been paying the monthly Banfield Total care. They re-entered my dog into their system and we get the appointment set up. I tell the front desk at Banfield that she's already had her 3 year rabies shot. Instead of believing me they went ahead and gave her another 3-year vaccination for rabies. What the hell?? Why?? Why would you not listen?

Well, I have to change my review. Yesterday 04-25-23 Johnny had his comprehensive exam scheduled with Dr. Krumbs at Banfield in Allen TX. I dropped Johnny off at about 1030am. My first call to check on him was at 1251. The phone went straight to a message stating that the office was closed and thatvi should leave a message. Thinking that, while extremely unusual and having never happened in all the years I have been coming to Banfield (since 2008), maybe it's because it's still lunch time, I left a message. At 150pm I tried again and received the same message. I became a bit panicked and called petsmart directly to ask if it was a phone issue. I was told by the manager o spoke with that they were looking at the Banfield employees and that they were on the phones. I asked I she could please have them call me for an update. At 210pm I received a call back stating simply that the phones had been down and that I should come pick up Johnny at 330pm. I arrived at 325pm. I was told that Johnny was giving the staff a hard time while they were trying to draw his blood and that he should be done soon. At 350 I asked again what was going on. I was told they were still trying to draw his blood and that he was becoming agitated and snapping at them. I would like to put in at this point, Johnny has been coming to Banfield for 7 years, he has NEVER given anyone a problem with getting blood, and he has NEVER, I repeat, NEVER, snapped at anyone. I asked if I could please help in some way ie. Hold him while they try, or at least be in the room with him for comfort while they try. I was told it would be a liability. I was not given Johnny back until 425pm. I was told by the tech that I was to drug him before brining him back in to get his blood drawn. After I got him to the car I noticed that his left eye was swollen and that he was not opening it all the way. I took pictures. Today his eye is oozing green mucus. In the hour that I stood pacing in front of the desk I never once hot to speak with the veterinarian. I was never called by the veterinarian. Why was I told to bring my baby in to sit in a crate for 5 hours before anything was started on him? Why was I not brought in to a room and allowed to try to calm my poor baby down? What happened to his eye? Why did he feel the need to try to bite? Why were the phones turned off? Why am I now being told to drug my dog instead of trying less invasive ideas? Why would anyone deliberately submit my baby to 5 hours of unnecessary stress?? I want answers! Thank you, Starzy
