How to Save Money at Companion Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I absolutely love everyone at this office. The girls at the front desk are friendly and professional. The vet techs were able to clip my dog’s nails when no one else could and they were very gentle with her. The vet took the time to address the issue I had with my dog’s anxiety. She even printed out articles with information on understanding why my dog gets anxious and a couple of places to reach out to for help. That’s above and beyond to me. The best part is that you could book appointments instead of first come first served. Overall, I highly recommend this office

After having this clinic as my primary for 4 years, I am leaving to find another vet to care for my animal. The main vet I have talked to, Brian, is very kind but not very detailed or helpful. Whenever I have brought my cat in and seen Brian, he doesn't offer me very many solutions or care options when I come across a problem. I discovered my cat has fleas and while this may not seem like the biggest issue, I haven't ever come across this problem before and I left feeling very in the dark about what to do with the situation. He didn't offer any tips or advice or even flea treatment options and I had to go to another clinic to figure out not only how to effectively treat my cat but how to disinfect my home as well. Fleas are small but a huge issue that effects more than the animal and the other vet I went to seemed to understand this much better than Brian did or cared to be upfront with me about. I barely even got to have a conversation with Brian before he was dismissing the issue for me to figure out how to fix. I also have an issue with this clinics communication. I had to wait an hour to see the vet yesterday, which I would have been fine with, but no one communicated with me that it would be that long. I know that things take a long time and things vary on the day. But I was left by myself in a room waiting with no idea when the vet would or would not be in to see me. I would understand if I had to go into a room to wait about 15 or 20 minutes, even 30, but an hour is so long for a man that didn't even bother to discuss solutions and care with me. I have to pay 75$ for an annual visit, and I want to feel like they actually care about me, my time, and my pets well being. I do not feel that way. I recognize that my experience might be few and far inbetween. I know there are some great doctors here, like Pearce. When I saw Pearce with my other cat about a dandruff issue, he was extremely kind and helped discuss diet for my animal, how to figure out the right portions, what kind of food to use and other solutions. I didn't have to wait as long for his arrival either. Overall, I understand this can be a great place. It's been nice sometimes, othertimes it's not. I will say that I also do not love that they don't go over the price of what they do, but I don't want to fault them specifically for this because I know other clinics are just as guilty for this. Never has a doctor ever said 'hey, you need this shot, but it's going to cost this much'. It would be amazing if anyone could be more upfront about the cost of care before footing you with the bill. I've gone to this vet before because I need a very specific thing checked out, but they always do an annual exam alongside looking at the issue. This is extremely frustrating because I never ask them to do this for me. I understand it's most likely a default especially if you haven't been in for a year, but I need doctors to be upfront that when they stick a thermometer in my cats ass it is going to cost me 75$. It's probably something unavoidable. I understand if it's mandatory. At least communicate that to me. I'm sick of being left in the dark by doctors and vets alike.

Yesterday over the phone was absolutely ridiculous with these people. I called a simply get more in-depth information about a powerful anabiotic as a returning client that was prescribed by a different doctor. A discussion surrounding a specific medication is not medical advice over the phone. It just information. It's not medical advise--no matter how much you'd like to rebrand it this way. the person answering the phone is a receptionist now instead of an actual vet tech. The same individual then decided that they were going to stick their nose into the situation even further by saying they're gonna call the other veterinary office as if that's supposed to do anything other than cause more problems. What good was that gonna do? They talked me in circles only to create more barriers to basic information surrounding a specific medication. When you call this office, it has a lengthy, silly, automated system that says, be kind to our staff. When your staff causes problems themselves, and then throws a fit and starts to spit balling terrible ideas, stepping over boundaries of clients. Absolutely ridiculous yesterday and whoever is answering the phone it's just looking for problems instead of trying to have a solution based conversation that was merely objective information.

I took our cat in with a hurt paw. Doctor was great. They got us right in and we were able to do vaccines at the same time. Kitty is acting fine now after taking the prescribed anti-inflammatory. Reasonable fee too!!
