How to Save Money at VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

These people tricked myself, my wife and my father into believing we had no other option than to put down our beloved pet. They lied to us about what was wrong with him and then continued to lie after I tried to get answers. The chart notes were changed and several members of this organization failed to show any kind of remorse for what happened. I’ve tried to move past this event for awhile and all the egregious acts that occurred are far too many for this platform but please feel free to reach out to me if you’d like to hear the whole story. I’ve spent over $10k with this organization and they still treated me wrong. If I ever decide to have another pet, I will absolutely never consider taking it to this place. The ordeal that these people put me through has changed me and my want to have any pets in the future. They should honestly be ashamed of themselves. They know full well who I am and I hope they’re reading this now. I’ll be sure to continue to review them every so often. Hank4 G’Goose Pin was more than just a dog to us and he should still be making us smile and filling our home with love and he is not because of this place. I will never forget

We recently came here due to our kitty Oliver having a blockage. The vet did such a good job explaining to our daughter why we were going to have to make the hard choice to put him down. Every staff member was so kind to all of us and so kind to Oliver. When we picked him up to take him to a crematory, he was in a little white coffin with him name and hearts on it. They also made us the cutest little vials of fur. During such a hard time, they showed so much compassion.

These guys are AMAZING! Doctor Carvajal and his team exceeded any and all expectations. Our young hound Maizey was either injured at a young age or was born with a deformity. Her left leg was twisted in opposite directions upper and lower. Her kneecap was inside her leg. She had no grove either for the kneecap. Doctor Carvajal took two weekends to build molds and bone cuts in order to help our dog. If this did not work Maizey was going to lose her leg. When doctor Carvajal began the surgery he realized the procedure was not going to work how he wanted. He had to pivot right there in active surgery. Maizeys ligaments were incredibly tight. The surgery was hours! We listened to Doctor Carvajal as best we could with post surgery. We gave Maizey some rehab........ We have a new dog! She runs, she plays, she jumps up when shes not supposed to just like the other dogs. We cannot recommend Doctor Carvajal and his team more. We feel blessed and always indebted to this awesome team!

The VCA team went above and beyond to care for my dog Jackson. He just spent a week with their team receiving radiation for his brain tumor. I cannot say enough good things about their whole team, from the front desk to the radiology group, everyone we interacted with was so kind and thorough! They were there to provide support every step of the way and were happy to answer any and all questions we had. Due to so many vet appointments over the past couple of months, Jackson has developed severe anxiety when going to the vet. They did everything they possibly could to keep him calm and happy prior to his radiation and post radiation while he waited to be picked up.

I went in to the VCA Saturday morning (10/11/25) because my dog wasn't feeling/acting normal. When I arrived the lady at the desk (Priscilla) asked a few questions and said there's a $230 emergency fee needed to pay, then she can call someone to come to the lobby and get my dog from me I paid and they took him back to get started. I was happy that they were getting straight to figuring out what is wrong. About 15 minutes go by and the lady at the desk calls me up to "pay my account" I asked what is wrong with my guy and what are they going to do? She was less than helpful, didn't know anything nor did she check at all, she was just calling me up to put $800 on my account for "just in case", a thing they do so they can start any treatment they see necessary. She assured me it was refundable should they not need the full amount. I told her I was not comfortable , and I wanted to know what they are planning on doing to him/what was wrong with him before agreeing or paying anything. An hour and a half later we're finally getting called back to a room to talk with a DR. I still do not have my dog at this point and the lady (I'm not sure if she was the Dr or not) that met us in the room told me they took his vitals and everything looks/sounds good to the eye but she recommended blood work and X-rays to see if there's a blockage or something internal we can't see. She then proceeded to tell me the X-rays would be $500 or more ($339 for imaging and $159 for somebody to READ the xray) and $356 for blood work. I agreed to the X-rays, because at this point I think it is something in his digestive system. We are shown back to the lobby to wait for him to get the X-rays. I still haven't seen my guy, we're waiting over 2 hours at this point, so if something were wrong in his body somewhere, he's just sitting in a kennel waiting in line to be fixed. The front desk lady calls me up again "ok, we're just going to need payment for the x-ray and then we can get started" again money. At this point I'm reaching out to people who can help me because I'm already over $1000 in and I still have no idea what's going on with my dog. 35 mins later I ask if my guy has had an X-ray yet, the lady at the desk says "I'm not sure, but I will go check" and proceeded to finish whatever she was doing on the computer for another 15 mins, chatting and laughing with her coworkers. This whole time I've been looking up other emergency vets that would work with me and payment plans, lines of credit, absolutely whatever it took to have my dog fixed before it's (worst case scenario) too late to fix. I got up to use the restroom and when I came back out she was no longer at the computer. Another 5 mins goes by and she again calls me to the desk and says "they haven't done the x-ray, and whenever you're ready to make the payment they can go ahead and get started". So at this point (about 3 hours) my dog has been sitting in the back with a potential blockage in his digestive system and they're not doing anything about it until I give them more money. I was about to lose my patience all over this woman, and said if they haven't done anything yet I would like my dog and paperwork (showing whatever the Dr/tech has done at this point) and that I'm leaving. The paper they provide me with is attached. We left and went to Dove Lewis, and I wish we just went there first. You can read my review on Dove Lewis by searching them on Google reviews just like you did here. TLDR: $235 and no answers, no tests, nothing. $235 to sit in the lobby for 3 hours. Places that care more about money than the work they're doing should be shut down, this is the most disgusting thing I've ever had to deal with. Do better VCA and you should give me my money back I highly doubt a company so centered around money would ever consider doing the right thing. And they clearly didn't listen to anything I said about symptoms my dog was having. He never once vomited or had diarrhea, they're just throwing in what they want I guess? "Donating to a pet in need" is a complete lie also, beware.
