How to Save Money at Queen West Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Always had a really good experience with this vet clinic. Was talking our previous cat there for 14 years! We traveled a lot with her so she was always going into the vet for check ups and health certificates. They helped navigate the ups and downs of her thyroid issues. Unfortunately she passed away at home last fall, the staff sent us a beautiful card with thoughtful paw prints of our little one. After taking some time to greave we decided to adopt 2 kitten. It’s unfortunate that they are currently understaffed at the moment and not taking new clients. We would have loved to continue to have them as our vet clinic. Still giving them 5 stars from previous experience, just unfortunate that we will now have to look elsewhere for our vet services. Hopefully they can figure out their staffing issues to continue to service the community.

Amazing practice, I cannot recommend it enough. I take two of my dogs here - Dr Jan is amazing and so are the front desk staff. I want to give a special recognition to Caitlin and Lynn as well. One of my dogs was having severe diarrhea and throwing up all night, I subsequently stayed up all night and sent them an email at 5am hoping they would answer when they opened to get an appointment booked in last minute and they called me as soon as they opened and I was able to come in early at 9:30am. It was my first time with Dr Jan and she was so patient and kind with my dog as well as super clear and communicated coherently options for my dog Bibou. We were able to get a probiotic and now Bibou seems to be feeling infinitely better than last night and on her way to recovering back to her normal self - stools are gradually returning back to normal and I can’t thank everyone at Queen West Vets for being so quick to respond and providing such amazing care.

This location boasts an upscale and clean environment with friendly staff. However, it falls short in terms of professionalism and organizational efficiency. I have consistently encountered issues with inaccurate information regarding my dog's vaccination and health records due to mismanagement of client files. Despite my efforts to communicate with multiple staff members about updating my dog's file with the correct information, my requests have been consistently ignored. This recurring issue has resulted in unnecessary and costly visits that could have been avoided with proper organization. For instance, during my last routine visit, they omitted my dog's annual health exam and required vaccination, necessitating additional paid visits. These mistakes have made me hesitant to switch vets, as I worry that the improperly organized files they would transfer to my potential new vet could lead to further complications and headaches. In conclusion, while this location offers a pleasant environment and friendly staff, its lack of professionalism and organizational skills has caused significant inconvenience and financial burden for pet owners like myself.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them as a vet. They have always been great with me and my fuzz kids. They give thoughtful advice and provide options appropriate for your pet based on their circumstances. They have helped heal my pets through a few scary injuries and have been compassionate when it was time for my pets to pass.
