How to Save Money at Lake Country Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

As someone with a fearful/reactive dog, having a veterinary team that is not only willing, but happy to accommodate our needs and do whatever it takes to make our vet visits seamless, and as minimally stressful as possible. The staff at Lake Country Animal Hospital are always calm and kind with me and Winnie, and quick to get her weighed and into a room, spending the least amount of time in the waiting room as possible. The receptionists respond quickly to emails, and have shown pictures and videos to the veterinarians on site to answer questions and help me figure out what I can manage at home and what may require a visit. The staff are all knowledgable, well educated and willing to answer any and all questions, even if it isn’t visit specific. I find everyone to be honest and have never once felt a test or treatment to be unnecessary. As Winnie and I have grown in the last couple years, Our veterinary team has shown a genuine interest in her progress with training, allowed and encouraged us to come in socially for desensitization and training purposes, and have even noticed her progress and complimented it, which was unexpected and shows me just how genuinely the whole team cares about not only the physical wellbeing of my pet, but her mental and emotional health as well. I cannot recommend this clinic enough, I know their careers are not easy ones, and I appreciate every single one of them for continuing to provide exceptional care animals. All our love, Lauren and Winnie

Cathy is such an amazing vet! I’ve been with her for years through all the highs and lows of owning pets. She goes over and above for our fur babies! She even stayed overnight with them one night when they had parvovirus and were very sick! She never pushes you to do anything or spend excessive amounts of money. She gives you all the options and advice and lets you make up your own mind with no guilt. She is so loving and caring! I highly recommend her to anyone in need of a good vet! ❤️

My 6 year. Old pitbull named baby was in a lot of pain and could barely walk so I took her to Lake country to be looked at. They told me she had torn both of her acl. In each knee they suggested surgery and. Im so glad i took there advice. She went from. Not being able to walk to. Back to running and wagging. Her tail non stop the surgeon they had come to do the surgery is amazing and did an awesome job. So. For anyone who has a dog in the same situation. Don't hesitate to get the tplo. Surgery done it was a life saver 👍

Definitely a Five star vet with Dr Hillary Rodd on staff. We left Orillia and District Vet when Hillary left. Great vet, thorough, friendly and doesn’t price gouge. Is it any wonder Orillia and District wouldn’t tell us where Hillary went after we asked them repeated times. Orillia and District would have lost half their clients. Our four GSD’s definitely miss Dr Hillary. Robin & Jen

Never returned my phone call and didn't really answer any questions in my email. I was certainly disappointed since they seemed to have good reviews and I had heard good things about them. They missed out on having a pretty cute client but I guess I need to keep looking for a vet.
