How to Save Money at VCA Canada Blue Cross Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Friendly and kind staff. Clean environment. The vet himself is very intelligent. They’re very supportive and easy to understand. My only problem is I took my dog here for heartworm treatment and he said to come back there to get heart guard prevention stuff all the time. I ran out so I went there to buy some but since my dog didn’t see the vet and only an assistant for appointments my dog is not “eligible” to get heart guard anymore??!? It’s like they’re trying to get another couple grand out of me to pay for treatment all over again!! If I want to make my dog “eligible” again I have to make an appointment to see the vet himself but she doesn’t need that rn and I’ll have to pay for it. They’re just trying to eat all my money here I swear. I’ll also add I was taking my other dog to get his vaccinations so I asked if it was safe for my other dog to get it while on treatment and I was pretty much told there is no point for vaccinations bc she was probably going to die but in the most polite way someone could say that I guess? It was kind of messed up to say that. Like I know the risks of treatment I just wanted to know if it was safe to take care of my dogs and have her protected ffs. Like what if one of the dogs got loose around my streetlike always and bit her or something. I just want my fur babies safe. Btw she didn’t die she’s still thriving and living her best life now. I will never thank them enough for saving my babies life. They are great here just some messed up experiences I’ve had are making me iffy now. Mixed feelings about this place.

I have been with blue cross for over 10 years and I will not ever go anywhere else. The people at Bluecross are amazing, all staff is friendly. You can tell they genuinely love animals. My experience with them is absolutely nothing short of spectacular. They saved the life of my girl Peachez years ago. I had an emergency with Peachez where she could’ve died at any second. They saved my dog Peachez with emergency surgery and she’s been doing great ever since. I’ll be forever grateful. Peachez remembers who saved her and is always excited when I bring her to the vet for a check up. Thank you so much and there is no one else I’d trust with my girl Peachez.

My cat had to have a pretty immediate surgery last night. He is doing a lot better but the service and care the staff have for animals is surreal. The receptionist was also amazing, and makes super cute catnip pillows that my baby boy absolutely loves. The vet he had was amazing and the care. I just am extremely happy that I know my boy will get the best care!

Friendly service and easy to get refills and food even with covid precautions. They took special care when our hamster passed away, even though she was not a patient there and were able to preserve paw prints that will forever be cherished. They have provided excellent care for my cat with congestive heart failure, who has exceeded all initial expectations and still plays as though he was a kitten many years later! Highly recommended! Still providing excellent care and good knowledge of the products they offer!

Had our 1st visit to the clinic. Everyone was so nice and pleasant. When Dr. Shannon called to review the exams she was very thorough and explained her findings in detail. I 100% feel we have chosen the right clinic for our fur babies
