How to Save Money at Village Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We recently took our anxious dog to Village Veterinary Clinic for her routine vaccines. The staff was incredibly understanding and accommodating, scheduling us for the last appointment of the day to minimize stress. Ingrid was fantastic! She answered all of our questions about our dog's behavior and health, providing valuable advice for her oral care. She even managed to keep our dog entertained during the vaccine process. The assistant was also very kind and did a great job trimming her nails. We've been hesitant to visit the vet due to our dog's anxiety, but our experience at Village Veterinary Clinic was truly exceptional. We're so grateful to have found such a caring and professional team!

Some of the vets here are great, however there have been repeated errors made with dosage, weight, lack of follow up and overall price increases. It seems the default diagnosis is always a surgery that will cost 5k plus without the vet even examining your animal. Double check that they have not made a dosage or weight mistakes when prescribing medications or when you are having bloodwork done. Basically, you have to advocate for yourself to ensure that your animal is receiving the proper treatment.

Really great services, my cat Pico goes there quite a lot and every time it’s great, my veterinarian is Dr. Bill and she is just the best vet we ever had:)!

I've not been more humiliated and treated so poorly. When we heard from others and also a vet herself that Russell was taking new clients we were very grateful as we live in town and would love to take our pets close by. We moved to Russell 3 years ago and only had 1 cat but had to drive elsewhere as they were full and not taking new clients. We've had three vet clinics in the lifetime of our pets and always been so happy with the services we've received at other vet clinics. Since we just got a new puppy it was the perfect time to start fresh. I called and they said they could book her in the same week for her 2nd set of vaccines (her first set done by the breeder). They said I would need to send an email requesting a new patient form and they would send it, they told me it could all be done the same day. I sent the email immediately requesting the form and when I didn't receive anything back for a few hours I called thinking maybe they forgot. They assured me they were busy and it was coming. when it came, I filled the form in and sent it back. The form was not straight forward as it was just in the email with no instructions on how to fill out, I figured out if I hit reply before I could type in the boxes and fill it out. It was a couple back and forths as I accidently put the wrong year of my pups birthday and I couldn't retype it, also I missed some other questions which I thought I answered in my reply but I guess I wasn't clear enough. With all the back and forths and phone calls I kindly mentioned I thought this could have been done more efficiently as it had taken the entire day and back and forths. It could easily have been a two minute phone call where they fill out the screening form on their end or they could have had the form on the website or a better more efficient format for their potential clients. I made the suggestion in a kind way, sharing my own frustration. I was not angry or upset, I know any business would want to know where and how they could improve for their clients and patients. I called the next morning to see if the form was received and if I could now book an appointment or if they would call me back. I wanted to know when that would be as the day before they claimed they had appointments this week and the form process should be done that day. Janet put me on hold for a couple minutes and then came back to say they receive the form and looking at it told me I was not a good fit for their office and should go elsewhere. I asked why, and they didn't give a reason. I guess it was because I had trouble with the form? I gave constructive feedback, not at all in a rude manner, I honestly thought it is kinder to let them know than not. I have not even met them and only been on the phone and email and was never rude to anyone and they refused me as a client. It was humiliating to say the least. Obviously I will never be taking any of my pets here and will tell anyone we know to go elsewhere. I called another vet (25 min. drive away sadly) and was on the phone for two minutes and had an appointment booked the next day for her vaccine. I really do not recommend this vet. It is so sad, as we love living in Russell and have such a good community and neighbours. I thought the businesses here would be the same. It makes me really sad.

Have a diabetic dog went to pick up more insulin for him, was told they wuold not sell me more because he had not had a curve done sine Feb of last year. Explained i only had enogh for one more day still would not give insulin for diabetic dog. Explained i needed it and could schedule a cure for him but they they were more concerned with money grapping for a new curve appointment then my dog running out of insulin. Told the lady at the counter I would be getting a new Vet and she did not care, her answer was ok. Horrible vet all they care about is money. No one cared or followed up about how my dog was doing every month i came in to get more needles or insulin. His last curve I took him in for they could not even do the curve saying they couldnt get blood to do curve. Would never reccomend this Vet they are all about the money. Wish I could give a less rating.
