How to Save Money at Lafontaine Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Unfortunately we’ve had several terrible experiences here this year. Having to point out being overcharged and then at a different appointment double charged for something that was already paid for. Miss communication from the front desk to the vet. I call with a question and they call me back 2 days later with the answer to a different question that I did not ask. Getting voice mail half the time when you call. They are to busy to truly listen and take all the information about your animal and only note half of the conversations and points to be considered for your pets well being. I am only finding out now, 19 months later about a condition that was found in my dogs X Ray and never mentioned to me. I found out from a specialist that had my dogs x rays from back then transferred to the new clinic. It’s a shame when you spend $2000 on surgery and x ray’s that they do not even take the time to properly update you on what was found. Had I known back then what they found, I could have prevented a lot of pain for my pet.😞

Customer service at Lafontaine has deteriorated steadily. I won't be bringing my pet here anymore. As many others have stated, since construction/renovations this place has been in disarray with people waiting and pet care becoming rushed and inadequate. I was deeply disappointed after my most recent and final visit. Do not settle for substandard care for your pet. Vets are plentiful. I am looking for a better vet. My dog deserves better.

Have been going here for years, and they have always been kind, understanding, and more. Wouldn't change vets ever

Have been a client of theirs for a few years, never have had good experiences. They never return phone calls, voicemails, and I often wait up to 20 minutes in the room for the vet to come in. The last straw, I was given an appointment time, arrived 5 min late and they refused to take me. Also, was given an appointment time only to arrive and they had given me the wrong time (this has happened twice)

Leaving 2 stars because the clinic does deserve some recognition for the AMAZING service given by Dr. Bossé & technicians, Megan & France, it’s no secret they have gone above and beyond for my pet and myself. I’ve never had issues with their reception staff either. However, on my last visit, things did go south. I was expressing some concerns on pricing of a medication. I will admit, I wasn’t happy, but a person (especially one who’s worked in the field) doesn’t just loose their patience for staff for no reason. I won’t name the person’s name because they should know exactly who she is and I have asked a manager to contact me (will they? Probably not.). This person came out to explain the reasoning behind my concerns. I immediately asked this person to stop, I didn’t need her explanation, I made calls myself and decided to have my pet’s file transferred. The person kept going after I asked she stop. I’ll admit, I repeated more abruptly that it wasn’t necessary, my pet will NOT be coming here anymore. However, she kept going after repeating again that I did not want to hear it. I think that was fair enough warning? Are we not aloud to say no? She then decided to let me know of her zero tolerance speech. I thought it was kind of funny at this point and my tone had changed due to her being extremely pushy & aggravating. The person kept pushing and pushing and pushing. That is NOT ok. Today, I received a letter from them letting me know my pet can no longer be seen at their clinic due to MY disrespect towards their staff member. Again, this is after I asked my file transferred and have already booked elsewhere. I felt disrespected by this person, yet I play out to be the bad guy. I think it’s odd that I never had any issues with any other staff member or clinic before my encounter with this staff member. Isn’t it funny how they want to be treated with respect, but immediately jump to conclusions and disrespect their clients. In my books, respect is a two way streak. It’s earned. You’re just a number at clinique vétérinaire Lafontaine. I learned that the hard way. It saddens me, especially given the amount of money my pet has brought in with his condition. And how much we love Dr. Bossé. Unfortunately, with the way things were handled, I can absolutely not recommend this clinic. For what is is worth, I will say I am sorry for losing my patience, perhaps I could have handled myself better, but I also think they should have a real good look at how they’ve handled things as well, because it wasn’t right & I will stand by that.
