How to Save Money at Mount Joy Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Been coming here for 10+ years with my dogs, Dr. Fong, Dr. Hu, Dr. Tran, Alina, Karen and all the staff have always been very kind seem to really listen to our concerns and care about the animals. Muffin just had surgery with them and she’s making an excellent recovery, thank you very much!

After researching and reading the reviews for veterinary clinics, we picked Mount Joy Animal Clinic for our dog. A couple of years later, when our seven-year old pooch needed surgery the service and after care, we received was substandard – it was disappointing and callous that the vet did not make the time to speak with us post checkup. In addition, the documentation they provided to our insurance company (and which they submitted directly to them) contained erroneous information that resulted in part of my claim being denied. On the day of the surgery, I hand delivered the pre-determination letter from my insurance company and spoke to their staff to ensure they understood what was and was not covered under my plan. I am not sure how or why this information was ignored. But because of this clinic’s inept submission of my insurance documentation, I am $1,000 out of pocket! They accepted NO responsibility. All they were willing to do was to use my experience for training purposes “on how to prevent miscommunication...”. That certainly does not ease the financial hardship I am facing because of their internal processes or lack thereof. Needless to say, we cannot continue to support a local business that does not accept accountability. Instead, they accused me of asking them to change my dog's medical records - which is completely and utterly untrue!!

Everyone is very kind and super gentle with our dogs. Gunner has anxiety and they are so patient with her. I have been coming here for over 20 years now and even with the change in vets and where I live (takes a lot longer to get there) I would 100% recommend mount joy. My pups are 6 and 10 and still have great energy :)

My family and I unfortunately had to say goodbye to our beloved Bruno on New Years day of this year. As Mount Joy was understandably closed, our experience at another clinic made us very grateful for the many years Bruno was cared for at Mount Joy. It would be difficult for any stranger to see Bruno the way we did because he was very protective of himself. He would have to be muzzled and the waiting room needed to be cleared of any other dogs. However, the team at Mount Joy had always supported us through caring for Bruno in the best way possible while making him feel comfortable. I never felt judged and instead was provided advice in how to care for him more. We had the pleasure of working with Dr.Erica in his early years, Dr.Trann, and Dr.Stephanie. They were thorough with him, walked us through procedures, trusted our understanding of what he’s comfortable with, and didn’t try to up sell us. Bruno had terrible experiences at his previous vet clinic so I was nervous when I wasn’t allowed to attend his appointments during the pandemic. Although he was still feisty during his appointment, he was always returned to me in good spirits – something I did not experience in the past. I highly recommend Dr.Trann and her team to care for your furfamily. It speaks volumes when an anxious dog like Bruno is not fearful of visiting the vet despite working with multiple veterinarians at the clinic. The entire team, including the assistants and receptionists, are across the board caring and passionate about their work. Though we are still deeply saddened by this loss, we find peace knowing that Bruno was well taken care of. Thank you Mount Joy for the many years of servicing our Bruno.
