How to Save Money at Mountain Vista Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My experience with CAPS has been nothing short of positive. Dr. Dodds, Lyndsey, and Lauren have all been very kind, and caring throughout my dog's rehabilitation. There has never been a moment that I didn't feel that they had his best interests in mind. His walking has improved and he's even been able to jump up on our bed again, which is a huge feat considering his nerve damage and osteoarthritis in his hips & legs. As a team the ladies have provided the best care to our boy, Bruno Mars. They are always very happy to answer any questions I have and treat me with the utmost respect. I have full faith in their ability to provide the best care possible for our or anyone else's pet. Thank you so very much Dr. Dodds, Lyndsey and Lauren for your continued support, concern, and the love you show to my Bruno.

Mountain Vista Veterinary Hospital has been an incredible support for our family and our pets. They have taken wonderful care of our dog, always providing thorough check-ups and genuinely caring for his well-being. The staff is so kind, attentive, and compassionate, which has made every visit a positive experience. When we recently had to say goodbye to our other dog, the team at Mountain Vista was incredibly supportive and empathetic during that difficult time. Their kindness and sensitivity made all the difference, and we felt truly cared for. We’re so grateful to have a veterinary hospital like Mountain Vista that not only provides exceptional medical care but also shows such genuine compassion for both pets and their owners. I can’t recommend them enough.

The ladies at CAPS are amazing! They have a great team who do various rehabilitation methods to help pets based on their specific needs. Our dog has been improving significantly since beginning session here and we are thrilled. Our dog loves coming here, and the team really cares about the progress and well-being of my pup. I love that they do a combination of underwater treadmill, acupuncture, laser and more.

Our family is very disappointed from the care that we received from Dr. Monaghan at Mountain Vista. Our sweet dog has been a patient of Mountain Vista for years, only requiring care for things such as updated injections, nail trimming, blood work, mole biopsies, a sore back, etc. Recently, our dog became acutely ill and required rapid assessment from a Veterinarian. Although Mountain Vista was able to fit us into their schedule quickly, upon assessment with Dr. Monaghan, she suggested only 2 options: urgent assessment from a neurologist in Toronto which would require MRI, or euthanasia. No other treatment options were offered. Within 1 hour of us taking our boy home to think as a family and make a decision, Dr. Monaghan called and asked “Have you made a decision yet? Because your dog is suffering”. Our dog was in no pain, but was showing vestibular syndrome symptoms such as nystagmus, dizziness, delayed reflexes, unsteady gait. He was still himself, wagging his tail and growling occasionally like he always does. When discussing the options with our family, we decided that before we make the decision to put our nearly 15 year old dog to sleep forever, we were going to inquire about a second opinion from a different Veterinary Clinic. When we took our dog for a second opinion, the Veterinarian that assessed him was shocked to hear that Dr. Monaghan strongly recommended either neurology assessment or euthanasia, as she did not offer our dog any other options and did not provide any interventions. The second opinion was: our dog had an acute head injury. The interventions given to our dog were steroid injections, anti-emetics and anti-histamines. When we brought our dog back the following day to the same Veterinarian that provided the second opinion, he was so pleased to find that our dog’s nystagmus was completely gone within 24hrs, and that his neurological symptoms were improving greatly. This Veterinarian was very optimistic that our dog would make a full recovery and be absolutely fine. Had we listened to Dr. Monaghan that day, we probably would have made a terrible decision to euthanize our boy, because she tried to convinced us that he was “suffering”. I am grateful for allowing my dog a second chance and providing him with a second opinion from another Veterinary Clinic. Because of this decision, he is recovering and still with us today. My hope is that Dr. Monaghan can learn from this experience, and think a little harder about her decisions and recommendations as a DVM when providing care to animals of this community. On a positive note, Dr. Erin at Mountain Vista is a very educated and compassionate Veterinarian. Should you find yourself at this clinic, I recommend her care for your animal.
