How to Save Money at Cavan Hills Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I went to Cavan Hills Veterinary Services after my dogs were attacked by a porcupine. I only brought two of them by car because of their size, while the third dog of mine waited at home. Although I have a good clinic closer to home, for some reason the GPS directed me to Cavan. After receiving a surprisingly high estimate for sedation and a 10-minute procedure to remove the quills, I decided to take my dogs to my usual clinic instead. Cavan Veterinary agreed that I could go elsewhere, and they were aware of my decision. My dogs are healthy, young, well-cared-for, and the vet staff knew they are an expensive breed. They are vaccinated on time, and all their records are up to date. At my regular clinic, I received excellent service at one-third of the price Cavan had quoted, and they promptly treated my dogs. However, shortly after leaving Cavan, they reported me to Animal Welfare for refusing their service. An Animal Welfare officer visited my home the next day, found everything in good order, and confirmed that my dogs were well-cared-for. I understand that Cavan lost business, but I cannot recommend their services and advise others to avoid them.

I cannot thank Cavan Hills enough for their incredible care and professionalism. They went above and beyond to accommodate us on very short notice and provided exceptional care for our beloved Yoshi. From the moment we arrived, the staff made me feel welcome and reassured. The vet and the team were compassionate, thorough, and attentive to every detail. They took the time to explain Yoshi’s treatment plan clearly and ensured all of my questions were answered. It’s rare to find such a dedicated and caring team. Our family is extremely grateful for Cavan Hills’ kindness, expertise, and efficiency. Yoshi is on the mend, and it’s all thanks to Cavan Hills!

I had to bring my Pup to Cavan Hills Veterinary Services today and I had a very good experience, they gave me a same day appointment, and all the staff were very kind and accommodating, especially Dr. Joyce Chiu, the part that warmed my heart is when just out of the blue she knelt down to give my big scary looking Pitbull(he’s friendly though) a big hug, and when my little guy got a bit nervous she made sure he knew she was only there to help him by showing him love and affection. Also I was very surprised that my bill was very fair and affordable considering they are a 24 hour animal hospital. Thank you Cavan Hills Veterinary Services for looking out for my absolute best friend today. God Bless you all.

As a young adult I probably take care of my dogs health better than my own, it's one of the most important priorities I have and it always will be for me. Recently, we had a health scare, and when I called 3 separate 24-hour clinics I was turned down or straight to voicemail on all but Cavan Hills. When I got there, I saw 2 buildings, the larger of the two is the main entrance for in patient care. Every step of the way I was helped professionally, I found the Dr. to be incredibly well rounded with extensive knowledge of the medicine but also about how to make my dog feel safe and my concerns being heard. I wasn't rushed out and felt like the price was well worth the services. A genuine passion and curiosity for the well-being of animals was felt here; hospitals in the past haven't always felt that way in my experience. Thanks for keeping my family healthy!

My family and I recently made use of Cavan Hills Veterinary Services to assist our dog, who was elderly and rapidly declining in health, to sleep. Our regular vet was closed for the weekend so we made the 35 minute drive to Cavan. It was worth the drive. The care and compassion our dog (and, by extension, we) experienced was second to none. Our receptionist was lovely and Dr McLaughlin was incredibly compassionate, showing remarkable bedside manner. He examined our dog and, after agreeing with our assessment, clearly laid out the steps for their "compassionate euthanasia" process. Our dog passed comfortably on our laps on a couch, receiving constant love and snuggles, rather than on a metal table. We were able to discreetly exit out the staff hallway, rather than back through the waiting room. They also gave us a paw print as a keepsake. Cavan Hills Veterinary Services made a difficult situation so much better. I hope we won't need to visit again for a long time but would readily do so if needed.
