How to Save Money at St. Catharines Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had to rush my cat GiGi here as he became lethargic within 24 hrs, they took Gigi immediately and did everything they could for him. He needed surgery asap and worked with me for options and what I could afford. Unfortunately just as things were looking up just as the surgery was almost complete Gigi's heart rate dropped. St. Catharines animal hospital did all saving techniques but unfortunately Gigi passed. I know they truly cared as they generously have paid for Gigis cremation, run and a plaster paw print. Gigi was a patient with St. Catharines animal hospital for 12 yrs. They’ve always been really good to him, he always charmed all the vet techs with his gorgeous white fur and maincoon features. I could tell that his loss also affect the whole office. They really showed how they cared and went above and beyond for me and my small family. I will continue to use them as my vet always. I was very upset at the time couldn’t truly show my thanks and I’ve been thinking about it for days so I just want to again say thank you guys so much for everything you did for us and Gigi. He meant so much to me and my family and what you’ve done for us will not be forgotten. Thank you so much 🤍

Dr. Boctor wasn't honest with us that he had missed a piece of bone, our dog had suffered greatly from this had to have another surgery. He is still not the same 11 months later. They used dental tools on him instead of veterinary tools. Do you believe that? I was told that from a very respected veterinary. It's been 2 years and he will never be right again. He is still looking at third surgery because of infection from the first. That man should not have a license.

I am a recent client to St. Catharines Animal Hospital and I am very impressed with the service I have received. I have been a pet owner for many years and have attended many veterinary clinics and at SCAH, my cats have received excellent care. The staff is very friendly and professional and I am always greeted warmly by the reception staff (Shannon and Tyson). I rarely have to wait to be seen. Dr Alex is quite thorough and the technicians ( usually Brittany or Ashley) who regularly draw bloodwork from my diabetic cat are very quick and skilled. Bandit never complains and highly recommends this clinic!

We’ve had some pretty traumatic experiences with vets in the past and we’re very anxious coming in. The staff here were nothing but kind and friendly, and they even had a little sign for our kitty! It’s the small things that make it feel welcoming. The technician and doctor we had were both very friendly and helpful, and made us feel comfortable asking questions. We got some tests run, some medication administered and prescribed, and a bag of specialty food and for the prices we’ve paid at emergency vets this was nothing! The receptionist also gave us some information on pet insurance in case of future accidents. You can tell that the staff care about the work they do and it made for such a comfortable environment. Thanks so much for sorting out our baby!

Great service, even with difficult animals, like my dog Cujo (not his real name to protect his identity 😉)! I've never had a problem getting an appointment either the day I call or the next, if it's an urgent matter. I would recommend St. Catharines Animal Hospital to anyone who cares about their pets health.
