How to Save Money at Beamsville Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am deeply saddened to say that after nearly 15 years of being a loyal client at this clinic, I will no longer be returning. It’s unfortunate because I have always appreciated the care my pets received here, but something has clearly changed, and not for the better. Recently, I had a concerning experience regarding my 8-year-old dog needing an X-ray. In the past, my dogs haven’t needed sedation for such procedures, so this new requirement struck me as unnecessary. When I expressed my concerns about this approach, I was met with rudeness from the staff. I simply wanted to understand why the process had changed, but instead of a professional discussion, I was accused of being rude for repeating the price quote back to the staff member. I was shocked by this response, especially since I kept it respectful throughout the interaction not once was there yelling or inappropriate langue used . It's frustrating to be labeled as rude for trying to clarify important information about my dog's care. Moreover, I found the communication to be wholly inadequate. I was promised a callback regarding my inquiries, but I never received any follow-up. I had to take the initiative to call back myself, still with no clear answers. This lack of responsiveness is disappointing and not reflective of the reliable service I once knew. It’s truly sad to be leaving a clinic where I have had many positive experiences over the years, but the recent behavior of the staff and the overall management of the clinic have led me to seek care elsewhere. It feels like this place no longer holds the same dedication to client relationships and compassionate care that I once appreciated. I hope that in the future, the clinic can address these issues for the sake of other pet owners who deserve honest communication and quality care for their beloved animals.

We had an emergency situation where other vets turned us away. The team here saw our furbaby quickly, was compassionate, empathetic and extremely patient with us as we has our very old kitty laid to rest. Thank you for caring for our loved one and us as we navigated through a tough decision.

Let me preface this review by saying I don't often write reviews unless I strongly feel that something needs to be heard. On Friday March 8 at around 3:45, my dog was hit by a car. She was in a lot of pain (although didn't seem life threatening). My family (and myself) have a long history with Beamsville Animal Hospital - in fact, we've taken all our dogs there for about the last 19 years (long time eh?). So naturally, my first instinct was to load the dog into my truck and drive there. The drive was approximately 15 minutes, and during the drive, I called them 5x in order to determine whether they could even attend to her (as they close at 5 for the weekend). I received no answer to all 5 of my calls. At approximately 4:05, I arrived at Beamsville Animal Hospital. There was one technician at the counter helping a lady in front of my. I waited precisely two minutes before feeling the need to interject and see if I could get some immediate attention for my injured dog laying on the floor in my vehicle bleeding and screeching. The technician told me I needed to wait my turn, to which I again, stressed the significance of the situation, feeling as though my dog required immediate attention. She said they were close to closing, and wasn't sure the vet could look at her. She eventually went to the back and checked with the vet after the look on my face told her all she needed to know. A different technician came out and walked to my vehicle with me. She looked at the dog in my truck and said it was too close to closing (now 4:10) and that I should go to the nearest animal hospital which was a 30 minute drive away. After taking my dogs here for the past 19 years, I have to say I'm appalled by the service I received. I felt I had to basically beg for service, and then was turned away without the slightest care - certainly not what you would expect from a vet that describes themselves as 'as empathetic and loving veterinary professionals, (they'll) take care of your pet as if they were our own' on their website. I didn't actually believe the dog required emergency medical attention so I went to the next closest vet's office (which also closes at 5). I arrived at 4:45 - immediately the vet saw us, did a thorough check over of my dog and prescribed some pain meds. I was out within 45 minutes and I couldn't be more thankful for their compassion!

Horrible. Went with our cat three times to be told that he was going blind but otherwise was perfectly healthy and fine. Despite going back over a couple weeks and trying to advocate for our cat and to get more information, they would just tell us the same thing and refer us to see a specialist, despite the fact that he now wasn’t eating and was sleeping all day and looked frail. Finally the last time we went, we said we wanted blood work NOW and to not wait to see the specialist (which would have costed thousands of dollars). They said okay but only were compliant because he had lost 7 lbs since our last visit the week prior… Our cat died at home the next day. Was told we’d get a call about blood work within 24 hours. I called 72 hours later because they still hadn’t called. They had the blood work results but didn’t call us. Turns out he had FIV. When we first went to the hospital with him when we got him 7 years prior, we asked them to do blood work to check for everything. Guess they never did, otherwise it would’ve been caught sooner and although there was nothing we could have done, we would have at least been prepared and he could have been put to sleep rather than suffer for weeks on end because we had no idea what was happening. So basically we spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars to not get answers until he was already gone. Would NOT recommend this vet to anyone.

I have been going to Beamsville Animal Hospital for over 15 years now and the doctors and staff are fantastic. They always explain all my options and advise the best treatment for my dogs. Dr. Jen is an amazing surgeon who saved one dog's vision and another dog's life. My dogs love going there, and start dancing in the car as soon as we pull off the highway. I can't say enough great things about.
