How to Save Money at Huronia Veterinary Emergency Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

In May, we rushed our 6 year old girl to Huronia. She had swallowed two skewers whole. They were incredibly fast acting and gave us time to weigh out imaging options. The surgery was performed and the attending Vet even stayed late to ensure he saw her through surgery. They removed both skewers and saved our dog Stella. She stayed with the team for two nights and was so well taken care of. A week later she celebrated her 7th birthday - which is only possible because of the life saving care we got. Thank you to this wonderful team who went above and beyond to make us feel confident with our decision. And, of course, for treating our girl so well. Remember: 1. Don't ever buy skewers. Food on a stick is not worth your dog's life. 2. These people have incredibly difficult jobs. They see a lot of sadness and stress. Be kind to them. They are doing their absolute best.

It’s now almost 4 months since our beloved setter was taken ill with a ruptured cancer of the liver. Two days earlier he had been happily bounding through our property before he suddenly became listless and stopped eating. I rushed him to Huronia and was so very grateful for the prompt, kind and professional care we received. It seemed an eternity to wait for the results of a scan and when the vet showed me the images I knew, as a retired nurse, that Chester could not survive and euthanasia was the only option for this magnificent dog. I can only thank Dr. Mathew McGee and the wonderful team who cared for Chester and helped us cope with our loss. We are blessed to have such a facility.

Huronia Emergency Vet gave my fiancee and I one of the best experiences considering our circumstances. Obviously the price is something to consider when owning a pet but we knew what was to be expected. The staff is incredible they will sit and talk with you trying to see things from your side they are great listeners and very helpful with forward moving advice. Our 6mo kitten needed stomach surgery and she came out of it will great progress already. We are so glad we chose Huronia to help our kitten

We brought our dog Bruce to the clinic after he had swallowed a ball and became ill. On examination they not only found the ball, but also a large mass on his spleen. Thank you so much to Dr Trish and staff who skillfully got our 11 year old boy with a heart murmur through surgery. All the staff from vets, techs and admin were incredibly compassionate and expert in their jobs. Bruce has healed well and was able to celebrate his 12th birthday the week after a spleen removal, liver biopsy and foreign body removal. We can’t say enough great things about this clinic. Words can not express how thankful we are! ❤️

We were in yesterday with our foster dog Cooper. From the minute we walked in the door we felt that everyone cared. The receptionist was outstanding and I’m sorry I didn’t get her name. She was run off her feet and still remained composed and empathetic to everyone who came in or called, very impressive. I believe she is right where she is supposed to be. There was a wait but we understand they have to take serious issues first of course so that actually made me feel better that Cooper wasn’t a full on emergency. When the vet tech came out and took us to the room she (again, sorry I don't recall her name, I was feeling anxious) was wonderful, very patient and listened with intent. Shortly after that the vet came in and was just as wonderful. We felt more at ease and all was explained. We did not feel rushed at all. Everyone loved Cooper and everyone was kind and empathetic to us. Overall, if you have to go there, it was a very good experience. We are grateful to all of you for what you do, I’m only sorry it’s so busy, that makes me sad.
