How to Save Money at Alexandria Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They are amazing and always make time to answer my questions. My dog changed the last couple years, she used to be happy and outgoing, loving to everyone, she then started resource guarding and seemed unhappy with less patience for other dogs which normally she loves. Turns out it was discomfort and with the proper meds she immediately became her old self, even stopped resource guarding overnight. We got a puppy and they helped me a lot with every step in making sure she always gets the best care and lots of love. They even put up with my ridiculous worries and questions without making me feel bad or stupid!! Bonus I have a bad memory and their email system reminds me when my girls need to come in for their vaccinations, gives me peace of mind knowing they are always up to date and one less thing in my day to remember.

We had wonderful, thoughtful and compassionate care at this clinic! What a fantastic team. My senior dog has a heart murmur and our usual vet wasn't comfortable performing some tooth extractions. Dr Jacquie was so kind, and was able to do it for us! Sparta now has a sparse smile but her remaining teeth are gleaming and she had zero complications. We also came from the east end of Ottawa where our first quote was approx $6000 on Lola St, so this was a welcome charge of $950 for what I consider to be comparable care by a dedicated and experienced team. I would definitely return to this vet clinic. Thank you for taking such good care of our old lady!

My 12 year old daschund was in serious need of a dental surgery with multiple tooth extractions. Since we are in the Ottawa region we were quoted over $5000 in the Algonquin vet which literally made me consider flying back to my home country in Ecuador with my dog as it is just insane. I was even told that he was going to need 2 surgeries because they were not even going to finish the dental work in less than 4 hours and he needed to come back for another surgery which was going to be more $$$$. I looked into a lot of Reddit posts about the Alexandria vet and everyone was saying how good it is and how worth the drive for an affordable vet but more importantly how good their service was. COMPLETELY TRUE!!!! My dog had his extractions as he needed them because they told me he would have to go back and that was the best option, he still has a few left that were able to be saved and he recovered in ONE DAY! They sent me with medication, everything was perfect and it cost me $1200!!!! I couldn’t be happier, if I could give the Alexandria 100 stars I would. I am so happy I found this vet. I know how important reviews are for a business, so if any pet owner is looking into them to make a decision, look no further!!! I told all my friends who own pets in Ottawa because I’m so glad I made this decision! Thank you!!!!

Tried to get an emergency appointment for my 3 year old dog that had Hotspots really bad but was told to wait for 2 weeks before I could get in. The receptionist has no knowledge of animals or cares to listen to what we need. Also my other dog I found a lump under her chin with a hole and puss and I was told not before 13 days. REALLY.
