How to Save Money at Acton Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Hess performed my dog’s luxating patella surgery a week and a half ago on my almost 9 year old maltese/dachshund. First he used a laser to cut him open so that there was barely any bleeding. Then he expertly created a groove in the bone where the patella sits which only lasted 15 minutes. After he sewed/ stapled him up. My dog is healing very well and there’s no issues with his incision. Dr. Hess has done a lot of luxating patella surgeries and I am 100% happy that we chose him to do the surgery. Jess the vet tech was also present during the surgery and monitored my dog during the entire procedure. She’s extremely good at what she does and the vet clinic is lucky to have her. Acton Vet Clinic staff truly loves their patients and treats every furry animal as if they were their own. You can see them snuggling the patients and showing genuine concern if they aren’t doing well. They are friendly, kind and know what they are doing. They work tirelessly to give you the best service and are worth the drive if you live far away.

I'm delighted with the exceptional care my rabbit, Leo, received at this vet clinic. The staff demonstrated genuine expertise and compassion during the neutering procedure and kept me up to date the whole time. The facility is really clean, and the follow-up instructions were clear. No matter how many times I called before, during and after the procedure the staff were always happy to help answer the questions I had. I appreciate their dedication to the well-being of Leo and highly recommended! I was promised a follow up call a couple days later that I didn’t receive. But no worries cause Leo recovered perfectly and is so happy now.

Just wanted to give an amazing shout out and thank you to Dr. Dev, Dr, Stephan and each and every member of the team, for seeing our frenchie on short notice who suddenly had hives, diarrhea and vomiting. From front desk to behind the scenes, every member of the Acton Veterinary team is courteous, kind, thorough, knowledgeable, professional, compassionate, and they really do treat our pets as if they were their own. Thank you again for the amazing care we received today (and always!).

I was recommended by the Cochrane’s to come to this clinic. I been coming here with my dogs Bo and Levi for about a year ish now and I been having a good experience with Dr Hess, Dr Stephen and with the tech Izzy! They are amazing and the staff is pretty friendly! Today I was put with Dr Devanshi Shah and I did not have the best experience she was friendly up until she asked me what food I fed my dogs and I told her I feed them “Instinct” it’s a mixture of kibble with freeze dried raw pieces in it. She then began to ask me why do I think it benefits my dogs if there are raw pieces in there. She then told me in a harsh way that It is horrible for my dog and I need to stop that food because it contains raw and that she will be adding that into his file as he can contaminate the clinic and he also contaminates my house as it will be coming from his body now since there are a few freeze dried raw pieces in there. I told her this is my preference and I will continue to feed him this food, and she did not like that. It’s whatever but I believe she can be kinder about it and if she wants to educate people on what she believes that’s fine but no need to bash someone for it I felt a bit attacked because of what I feed my dog. Other than that my experience here has always been good. I recommend this clinic but if you feed kibble that contains a few pieces of freeze dried raw or complete raw good luck lol.
