How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog, Molly, couldn’t have been in more qualified hands! She was bleeding on her face and the staff assured me she would be okay. Although Molly and I were both nervous, everyone was calmed, collected, and reassuring. Thank you so much for providing the help we needed and being such an amazing team! Will definitely be coming back and absolutely recommending you guys to everyone with a fur baby!

We can't thank the team at VEG enough for the incredible care they provided to our 2-year-old Golden-doodle River during such a frightening time. When she was diagnosed with ITP, a serious blood disorder, we were devastated and unsure of what the future held. From the moment we walked through the doors, the entire staff showed such compassion and dedication, not only to our dog but also to us. Dr. Harries took the time to explain her condition in detail, answering all of our questions, and reassuring us that she was in the best possible hands. He was incredible! The vets and nurses treated her like she was their own, and their constant updates kept us at ease even in the most difficult moments. The level of professionalism, combined with their genuine kindness, made a world of difference to us. Our girl is now on the road to recovery, and we owe it all to the wonderful team at VEG. We will always be grateful for the care and support you showed our family during this tough time. If you're looking for a place where your pet will be treated with love, skill, and compassion, VEG is your place!

This past Sunday, my 12 yo Patterdale Terrier dislocated his ankle playing outside. I called, and the receptionist was pleasant, and within the hour, I was at this facility. Everyone there was just AWESOME! From all the interactions with the team we had, we could just tell the team LOVED what they did and were compassionate people. A special thank you to Nurse Julia Warhol and Eddie Garcia - you both were Rockstars, and every time you returned with my baby, he was amazingly calm! Thank you for the caring and steady hands! ☺️

My dog Boots has been seen twice at VEG union NJ, Both times for fairly complicated health problems, that I might add, they have diagnosed and treated perfectly.,. I cannot speak highly enough about the exceptional care we have received on both instances. The entire staff are loving, caring, kind, and respectful, not only to the pets, but also to their owners. On this last hospitalization, Dr. Rocha reached out the next day, even after our Boots had left their care, to find out how he was doing. I wish I could do more for them then write a nice review of their services because the staff at VEG Union are all amazing people.

Can’t thank the team at VEG union enough. Our cat Benny was in bad shape, our vet called to say his bloodwork came back to show he was in heart failure. By the time we got him to VEG it seemed like he was coding, but they took him in immediately and were able to stabilize him. The Doctor Charlotte Kuk (and her team) is amazing, she also helped us find a cardiologist for him same day (we called so many places and none had one working). So thankful to everyone there. You can now see Benny back to normal in the pictures below. While his condition isn’t curable, he is now on treatment and we hope to have him around a little longer.
