How to Save Money at Driftwood Vet

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff was very kind and caring with my dog Bowie. Bowie is a puppy and new to grooming still but he’s quite large and can be a handful. He was a little nervous but the groomers were wonderful with him. They sat with him and fed him some treats I brought and helped him feel so comfortable that he followed them back and jumped in the bathtub all on his own! I live across town and asked if it was possible to be given a heads up before he was done so I could be on my way to get him while they finished; they gave me a 30 minute notice so I could drive to get him and pick him up right away (he doesn’t like to wait in the kennels so this was wonderful!). I would highly recommend their services! They even sent me a photo of him in the bathtub during his appointment which made my day!

We had taken our cat here after a terrible experience at another vet. I liked the easy wait in your car aspect and I had explained the issues we had been having- the receptionist was super nice and helped explain the drive thru- because we got a little confused. Our cat needed a fungal test, we were told it would probably take 7-10 days. We received a call the Monday after (appointment was on a Friday) asking how our cat was doing. Since he had been given some steroids he was doing alright! I was told the vet would call us back after she had heard how he was doing, I had spoke to someone else in the clinic. We didn’t receive a call, my mistake I could have thought we would receive one regardless because of the fungal test. A few days later I just got a email recommendation for a VERY expensive pet food and nothing else. Just disappointed that a vet didn’t call us to explain the results of the fungal but instead just sent an email for a prescription grade food. Felt impersonal and a bit like “ok, you paid” and dropped the ball. I view my cat vet appointments just like a humans, I expect a follow up and help. **Update I was contacted by a vet, thank you! She discussed options with me and apologized. Thank you, will be back.

After not receiving a thorough examination, diagnosis, and treatment at 3 different vets, we finally came across Dr. Tony at Driftwood Vet. We were very happy with the care he provided and appreciated the phone call updates. We don’t mind driving over an hour to make sure Milo receives the best care and will be making Driftwood the only place we take our dog! All staff members were very friendly and welcoming! In a society that seems to be shifting toward high patient volume and a bit lower quality of care, it’s the little things that make all the difference and driftwood pays attention to those “little things”.

We've taken two dogs to Driftwood over the years and had nothing but great experiences. From boarding, vet, and grooming everything has been professional and reasonably priced. The drive thru drop off is extremely convenient.
