How to Save Money at Mills Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I couldn't have found a most caring, empathetic, knowledgeable vet office. My fur baby was very ill, took him to a couple of different vets which were charging outrageous prices for a "surgery" that wouldn't have saved his life anyways. I found this little gem right in my hometown. They showed me his cancer was already beyond any help. They made sure the process of letting him go was as peaceful and reassuring as possible as we held our fur baby until he took his last breath. I will forever be grateful for such a caring team during one of the most difficult times of my life. They even sent a beautiful arrangement to my home a few days later with encouraging words, something I will treasure forever. Now my fur babies and I have found our new family vet. Totally recommend them!

This vet office is great! I'm always in and out pretty quickly. They are upfront will all their costs so no surprises at checkout. The staff is always so nice and caring. The vets give you all the information you need and take the time to go over things in more detail if you have questions. I would recommend them to any of our friends and family with furry children. My parents made the switch after we did and also had a great experience.

Last month my 18 year old pup Riff Raff had a severe and sudden medical issue come up. The vet that I’ve taken him to since he was a puppy said they would not be able to see him for a few weeks, but luckily I was able to get in contact with Mills Animal Hospital and they were able to see him the next day. Dr. Moran evaluated Riffy, and unfortunately gave me the news that I had been dreading, but he did it very gently and caring. He allowed me to schedule my appointment for the next day so that I could have one more day with my boy. When I came in for the appointment that morning, Dr. Moran explained the procedure to me and my family very softly and with a very caring tone to help us prepare, which really helped me get through the appointment. His clear indication that he understands how difficult this was for me and my family was very comforting, it didn’t just feel like it was another appointment for him, and I am very appreciative of that. It didn’t feel like just another patient for him, even though I’m sure he has had to do this several times. It felt like someone who truly understood that I was having to say goodbye to a true friend and family member that I received as a Christmas Eve gift when I turned 6 years old, and here I am at almost 24 having to say goodbye to him. He gave us several minutes to say our goodbyes with absolutely no rush at all and after the procedure was done he allowed us to be alone as a family in the room for as long as we needed. Dr. Moran was extremely kind, as well as all of the other staff I had the pleasure of speaking with given the extremely unfortunate circumstances. This review is mainly to say thank you to everyone that provided comfort for me and my boy. Today I received a card in the mail from the staff at Mills with little notes expressing their condolences. Even though the reason I had to come here was terrible, I’m very glad that it ended up being here, and I’m sure Riff Raff was too.

Very affordable and kind vet clinic. One of my boarding pets is a regular with behavioral issues and they are very understanding. Got us in same day after she sustained a laceration and got her taken care of!

I was able to schedule an appointment for our senior dog, quickly after a health scare she experienced. From the first phone call the services and care we received were professional, thorough, and delivered with kindness and consideration for our sweet girl. Dr Moran and his staff at Mills Animal Hospital gained our trust as procedures were explain and carried out and a diagnosis and a treatment plan was put into place to ensure her comfort and ease of symptoms. I appreciated the next day phone call to check the medication that was started did not have ill effects but were being tolerated. I highly recommend this Animal Hospital and will be referring them to my friends and family for their fur family
