How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought both my new rescue babies into VEG after they got into the trash and ate moldy food. We were immediately greeted with warm, friendly faces and given a room and a game plan. Both Birch and Freckles seemed at ease, even being in a vet's office. I didn't feel pressured to run unnecessary tests or spend money I don't have; just straightforward care to figure out what's going on. Turns out only one dog did the eating and the team gave it their absolute best efforts to try and induce vomiting. This girl is stubborn as heck and wouldn't do it. Rather than needing to pay to stay overnight, the team explained what to look for and let us go home to rest on our own. What could have been an emotionally (and financially!) devastating night ended with two wagging tails. Thank you so much for the whole team (wish I'd gotten their names but was so focused on my baby's care). Hope I don't need to go back, but good to know this open exists whenever we need it. 💙🐾

Had to bring my dog in on Easter and thankfully they were opened. Checked in online and was able to bring my dog in and be seen immediately. We were welcomed with multiple nurses who were all so sweet to my baby. The nurse and doctor were both so nice and caring to Henley and gave him so many compliments (which he appreciated a lot). They even gave him an Easter basket with a toy, treats, and a bandana! Overall a great experience and took such good care of my baby, even on an holiday. Would recommend to anyone needing immediate care for their pets!

What a hospital! As pet parents we never want to find ourselves at the ER vet but unfortunately my family found ourselves there after our Lab Goose went into sudden extertional heatstroke after playing at the park for only 30 minutes. If it wasn’t for Dr. Riddick and her team our boy wouldn’t have made it. The second we walked in they sprung into immediate action with no time to lose. They took extreme care and the best part, we got to be with him the entire time. I have actually worked at many vet practices myself and VEGs open concept style truly is extraordinary. You never have to wonder what is happening as you can be right by your pet’s side every second. Our boy was hospitalized overnight and we were welcomed into an overnight room to stay with him until he could safely be discharged. We are so extremely thankful for this facility and their team. We hope to never have another emergency but it’s so reassuring to know this facility is there just in case. We would also like to shout out the customer experience coordinator, Kevin. He was a true gem ensuring we were comfortable offerings snacks, drinks and even light conversation to take our minds of the traumatic situation we were experiencing. Thank you VEG St. Pete for being the real heroes!

I cannot say enough incredible things about VEG in St. Pete. Late Friday night, my dog Arlo suddenly collapsed without warning. I rushed her to VEG, and from the moment I walked in, I knew we were in the best hands. Mike was the first person I met, and his kindness immediately put me at ease during what was the scariest moment of my life. Dr. Manning wasted no time — she ran tests right away and discovered that Arlo had a ruptured tumor on her spleen and was bleeding internally. She was rushed into emergency surgery. Dr. Pollihan, who wasn’t even scheduled to work, came in to assist simply because he’s so passionate about surgery. That alone speaks volumes about the kind of people who work here. What makes VEG truly unique is that you never have to leave your pet. The entire hospital is open-concept, and you’re involved in every step. They even gave me a private room with a pullout couch so I could get some sleep while Arlo was in surgery — and they told me if I woke up at any point, I could go watch the surgery through a window. The care and thoughtfulness were just beyond anything I could have hoped for. The surgery was a success thanks to Dr. Manning and her amazing team. Throughout the night, nurses Amy T. and Alicia were incredible — so kind, so compassionate — I truly felt like Arlo and I were surrounded by love and competence. The next day, Dr. Riddick and Amy Grace took over Arlo’s care, and they were just as wonderful. Dr. Riddick has incredible bedside manner, and Amy Grace brought such fun, positive energy into a tough situation. I also have to give a special shoutout to Kevin and Candace, who were so much fun to chat with and made the experience even lighter. Honestly, every single person I interacted with was amazing — which is so rare. Not a single “bad egg” in the bunch. It was actually bittersweet to leave because I was sad to say goodbye to everyone who helped save Arlo’s life. And to top it all off — I just got the call that Arlo’s tumor was benign. Thanks to VEG, my sweet girl is still here and we can finally move forward. If you ever find yourself in an emergency with your pet, do not even think twice. VEG St. Pete is where you need to go. They gave me my dog’s life back, and I will be forever grateful.

Couldn’t have asked for a better experience! Staff was quick to check us in and made my pup feel so loved and comfortable. Loved the open floor concept where you can be with your animal the entire time with the doctor explaining what they will be doing, why, and giving you various options for the care. And they followed up a day later to see how my boy was doing. Thank you for the care and making my pup feel so loved!
