How to Save Money at Pasadena Veterinary Hospital & Laser Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Mills and his staff have been a godsend. After many months of treating our new and incredibly sick puppies at Royal Pets on 66th nothing was getting any better. I googled vets near me and found Pasadena Vet Hospital. They were able to squeeze us in the same day. Dr Mills requested that we do a culture test, which Royal Pets did not do even once. Long story short, the very expensive antibiotics that were being prescribed time after time were pointless. They were completely resistant to the bacterial infection that was present. We have been dealing with this since we got them in March. I took them to Dr Mills in August and immediately started seeing improvement. Since they were sick for so long it’s still going to be a bit of a process but we are absolutely on the right track! I would recommend Dr Mills to anyone and everyone needing an amazing veterinarian in their lives! Thank you for your hard work and dedication Dr Mills!!!!

Dr. Mills and his staff really were wonderful when my dog had cancer. The doctor was excellent in diagnosing, treating, and prolonging my dogs life through her cancer journey. I was so glad to find a confident and skilled surgeon that could effectively treat her. I have nothing but gratitude to his office for all they he and his staff did for her. With Pasadena Veterinary Hospitals assistance, she was able to live for a couple more months, instead of a couple more days. Thank you!

Dr. Mills is very skillful and always does a thorough examination of all the health needs of his patients. He goes above and beyond to get to the root cause of every ailment a patient may have using every diagnostic tool available. He is also a highly qualified surgeon and has many academic achievements and accolades in continuing education. He has by far the best staff when it comes to their passion and love for the animals they take such great care of. Their welcoming and friendly disposition to the clients and their pets makes everyone feel at home. The entire team gives 110% of themselves to provide the best care a pet could ever get.

Only take your pet here if you want a vet that cares more about money than your animal. Dr. Mills will recommend supplements, medications and treatment plans that are not necessary in an effort to increase the cost. Both times I was stupid enough to go, I was incorrectly charged and then back-charged to correct the errors. I was recommend to perform costly tests one after another to ensure the health of my pet and between fees to administer monthly preventatives, supplements, recommended costly prescription foods, additional tests, needed prescriptions and the required vaccines I made the appointment for, I paid well over $600 for my healthy pet as the doctor lectured me endlessly on all the things I should be afraid of and how inept I was at caring for my pet because I hadn't considered all the countless things he was throwing at me verbally and in pamphlet form. When I finally realized that he was preying on fears and I found another vet, my eyes were tryly opened to all the upsells and extras. This man preys on the people who trust him to care for those animals they love and it's a travesty. He's not interested in protecting your pet, only how much money he can make off of you- especially if you pay in cash.
