How to Save Money at Bayshore Animal Hospital & Avian Practice

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Such a wonderful vet clinic! We had to take my daughters leopard gecko to Bayshore for an impaction. The girls at the front desk were super friendly, and we hardly had to wait at all before they took us back to see the vet. I appreciate the time they took to explain what was happening and why… and that they even included my daughter in explaining the treatment while it was happening. (Such a great learning moment for her!) Added bonus… our bill was much less than I was fearing it would be. (This was my first experience taking a reptile to the vet, so I had no idea what to expect.) Very good chance I will be moving all of our pets to this practice for their care moving forward. Highly recommend!!

They took in my Jack Russell Dusty on short notice on vacation. They did complete check up on him and took great care of him! He came back in excellent spirits. Highly recommend

Everyone was so considerate and willing to do what was asked when we brought our daughter’s gerbil, Fritz, in for surgery. It was important that his buddy came along for the day and that the two of them stayed together as long as possible prior, and were reunited as soon as possible after, surgery. Thank you so much for taking great care of the boys!

Everyone was absolutely wonderful! Every single person I came into contact with throughout the entire visit was both friendly and knowledgeable. The doctor was so personable and gave me several options right off the bat. He was welcoming and inviting of any questions I had. We are new to the area and we are SO happy to have found such a great veterinarian office for our fur babies so quickly!

Original BANDINGO!!!

Iffy came home as a hand fed cockatiel in 1989. He was an 8th grade graduation gift from my mom. A year prior to his arrival, she gave me a young cockatiel I named Buddy. He was sweet and kind and truly was my best buddy in a time I didn’t have many friends. One morning we saw an egg on the bottom of the cage and we come to find out our bird is a she, so I changed her name to Buffy. Unfortunately, she eventually became egg-bound and passed away. My mom, being the amazing human she is, went right out and picked another bird to help my aching heart. We named him Iffy because we weren’t sure if he was a male or female. Iffy wasn’t the nicest bird and he never liked to be held, nor did he ever go to a vet. Anytime anyone tried to pet him or get close with their hand or finger he would open his beak and shake his head preparing to sever anything in front of him! My mom said he was just so mean. Moving a bird isn’t healthy for them so I didn’t take Iffy when I moved out and away to Colorado after college. He stayed with my mom. She had to get her house tented once so she moved Iffy and his belongings to her office, where he stayed for the next 25 or so years. He was well fed and had his freedom to fly around or walk around that office for a long time. He lived on an old fabric and chromed office chair that looked like it came from the 70s. He loved seeing himself in those mirrored chair legs too. Last month he started acting different and looked like he had trouble walking. Over the course of four weeks he had some good days and bad days where he was just not very active or he lost his balance and would fall over. Yesterday he was propping himself up all day because he had fallen over many times and when he couldn’t get up and she helped him, that was the final straw for my mom. She didn’t want him to live like this and suffer and was crying all day because after 34 years of loving this beautiful, and according to her, a mean bird lol, she knew it was his time. And that brings us to you, Bayshore Animal Hospital. My wife knows Dr. Learning from the nonprofit world in which she works. My mom called you first and found out you were completely booked, yet your amazing administrator still listened to her about what was going on with Iffy and what she wanted for him. Not only did she comfort her heart by being there for her with compassion, she found a way for Iffy to be seen and examined later in the early evening. Thank you for that. She really couldn’t have another day like yesterday repeated. It literally devastated her seeing his decline. Dr. Learning and his assistant vet (I didn’t remember her name either) were both so caring and understanding of what we were going through. I was so thankful that he examined Iffy and pointed out the physical signs of Iffy’s deteriorating condition. It broke me a little bit because I felt so sad for him, but knowing he LIVED THIRTY FOUR YEARS makes it a little bit better ❤️ (I think he was the oldest living cockatiel in the World, as he came home in early 1989) My mom placed a rose in the cat carrier for it to be creamated along with him, as her final request. I asked that the millet seed be with him too. Thank you very much for who you all are and what you do. 💔❤️❤️❤️ I couldn’t recommend you enough.
