How to Save on Veterinary Costs at Banfield Pet Hospital

Preventive care

Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.

Compare prescription pricing

Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.

Consider pet insurance

Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

Getting to Know Your Veterinarian

Choosing a veterinarian is an important decision for pet parents. A strong vet relationship is built on trust, communication, and understanding your pet’s individual needs.

Experience

Ask whether the clinic has experience treating your specific type of pet, since care can vary between dogs, cats, and pocket pets.

Emergency Care Procedures

It’s helpful to understand how the clinic handles after-hours emergencies, including whether they provide emergency services or refer to nearby emergency hospitals.

Communication Preferences

Ask how the clinic communicates with pet parents, including updates, test results, and follow up questions.

Breed Specific Health Considerations

Some breeds may be more prone to certain health conditions. Early awareness can help with prevention and early treatment.

Facility Tour

Third review edit as an actual patient, 3 hours for vaccines… After this mess up and some communication they’ve been way better and faster. 4 stars for now. Every single time I got to complain to the front desk. They take over 50 minutes for a single vaccine with appointments. More than 4 times Ive been here for hours. Every single time I got to remind them im here. Pets shouldn’t have to suffer back there waiting on them if I made an appointment for that same reason. They don’t check up on you unless they notice mad behavior.

Great pet hospital, with educated & loving veterinarians. Now open on Sundays, we had an appointment for 3pm but they had to push us back 30 mins, due to them running behind schedule, thankfully they called ahead of time to inform us.

Misled, Heartbroken, and Still Being Charged After My Cat Passed I lost my beloved cat Jasper on June 12, 2025. He passed away after struggling with a urinary blockage that I couldn’t afford to treat — and now, Banfield wants to keep charging me $55 a month until May 2026 under a “contract” I was never told existed. Jasper was enrolled in the Banfield Wellness Plan on the same day as his very first vet visit — May 12. I was told it was month-to-month, and that I could cancel any time. I was never shown or asked to sign anything explaining a 12-month financial obligation. I even asked about upgrading coverage later and was told I could just pay the difference — another sign that the plan was flexible, not locked-in. After Jasper passed, I disabled auto-renewal and was refunded for our final visit. I was told the plan was canceled — no one explained that I’d still be charged. Then, two weeks after losing him, they charged me anyway. When I asked why, they sent me a breakdown claiming I now owe over $500 more. Let me be very clear: They still want to collect — even after you lose your family member. That’s the kind of company this is. They take advantage of desperate pet parents in crisis, misrepresent plan terms, and then hit you with bills for care you’ll never receive — even after your pet is gone. If you’re considering Banfield, please be careful. Ask for everything in writing. And know that the fine print may cost you more than money.be warned!
