How to Save on Veterinary Costs at Extra Care Animal Hospital

Preventive care

Compare prescription pricing

Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.

Consider pet insurance

Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Jodi Thannum and the staff at Extra Care Animal Hospital in Davie, Florida. From the moment we arrived, she was incredibly compassionate, patient, and genuinely caring. She spent real time talking with us about our dog Madison and even took the time to discuss our beloved Eli, who recently passed. That meant more than she knows. Dr. Thannum listened carefully, validated our concerns, and treated Madison with such gentleness. She explained everything clearly and never rushed us. Her staff was just as kind — welcoming, supportive, and attentive. Madison is grieving the loss of her buddy Eli, and Dr. Thannum recognized that immediately. She helped us understand what was happening and provided medication to help Madison through her stress. We left feeling supported, understood, and truly cared for. This is the kind of veterinarian every pet parent hopes to find. We are so grateful for her and the entire team at Extra Care Animal Hospital.

My family and I have trusted Extra Care Animal Hospital since we moved here from the West Coast in 2000. Over the years, we briefly tried other veterinarians due to rising costs, but nothing compares to the care, compassion, and dedication we experienced when we truly needed it most. One of our three beloved kitties, Katy Pury, was recently diagnosed with feline triaditis. We don’t have children—our cats are our babies. When our previous vet said he would “look into options” and never followed up, we were devastated and scared. We knew we wanted to do everything possible for our girl and didn’t want to live with regrets. That’s when Jodi and Dr. B stepped in—and changed everything. From the very first conversation, we felt heard, supported, and hopeful. They offered a truly integrative approach using both Western and Eastern medicine, including acupuncture and herbal therapy. Katy Pury was treated immediately during our first visit, and we are already seeing encouraging signs of improvement with her follow-up care. Instead of being told to prepare for goodbye, we are now filled with hope that our girl will be with us longer because of the thoughtful, proactive treatment she is receiving. If you ever feel that your current vet isn’t doing everything possible for your pet, I cannot recommend strongly enough that you seek a second opinion here. Extra Care Animal Hospital goes above and beyond—not just treating pets, but caring for families. Thank you, Jodi and Dr. B, for your compassion, expertise, and for giving us hope when we needed it most. You are truly helping save our baby, Katy Pury. ❤️

Extra Care Animal Hospital has been such a good place for our family - a true blessing! We have been taking our dogs here for many years. They are always on time, very clean, extremely professional, and super loving! I can’t thank Dr. Thannum and her staff Amber, Arlena & Kate enough for taking excellent care and showing compassion to both of our fur babies and us. I highly recommend her veterinarian office.

I used to truly love this veterinary practice. For years, they took excellent care of my dogs. Unfortunately, over the past few months, the quality of care has declined significantly, and after my last two visits within a single month, I will not be returning. I am deeply disappointed. There has also been an entirely new staff within the past month, which may help explain the drastic change. I have two Portuguese Water Dogs. About three months ago, my younger dog began showing signs of a possible UTI. I was told it was likely behavioral and was sent home with Chinese herbs. Her symptoms persisted for months, and about three weeks ago she began scooting and scratching at her ear. At that point, I brought her in and explicitly requested a full examination, including bloodwork, and asked that her ears, anal glands, and possible UTI be thoroughly checked. A few days later, the doctor called to say there was blood in her urine sample and that it would be sent out for culture. Given that my dog had been experiencing discomfort for weeks—possibly months—I asked for antibiotics to start immediately rather than have her continue to suffer while waiting. I called the office every day for seven days and received no response. When I finally reached someone, I was told I could pick up wipes the day before Thanksgiving. We had a follow-up appointment the day after Thanksgiving. During that visit, I again raised concerns about her ears and anal glands. I was told there was nothing wrong and was advised to simply add more fiber to her diet. At that appointment, I was finally given antibiotics for a possible UTI, though I was told the culture had come back negative. Despite this, my dog was clearly still in pain. I was able to get her into a different veterinary practice the following week. This is where my frustration turned into heartbreak. The new vet conducted a thorough exam that lasted over an hour. They discovered that my dog had two severe ear infections—both bacterial and yeast—as well as severely infected anal glands. She is now on strong antibiotics for another 10 days, along with medicated ear drops. Knowing how long my dog suffered unnecessarily is devastating. This experience has permanently changed my trust in Extra Care, and I will never return.
