How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

BEST VET EXPERIENCE EVER! Sonia, Dr. Kechejian, Dr. Broughton and Mark are all wonderful! They were so kind, attentive, professional and caring! We’ve come in twice over the past two weeks and each time we were treated with such compassion, they go above and beyond to make sure your concerns are addressed. Thanks guys! Here’s a picture of my dog after his visit, happy as a clam! 🥰

Recurring monthly wellness plan charge is a decent idea. Long waits. Today the person at the counter literally called 2 people ahead of us in line and completely ignored us when I started walking forward. Finally got acknowled and told that I have to wait 10 more minutes after already waiting half an hour to check in. My dog is brachycephalic and they put a slip knot leash on his throat the last visit. When scheduling the drop off visit, the person on the phone said it would be an hour or two. I called multiple times and was finally told the person who told me the time frame was wrong. Dr. Broughton is fantastic but we probably won't be renewing our membership again after today.

We moved from out of state, and this location has been immensely frustrating. We have an older dog plus other dogs. Each visit is contradictory from the last. They take extensive notes but never refer back to them as we are asked the same questions over and over. What should have been a ten minute appointment turns into forty because they don't listen, repeat bad information to upsell into the prescription based dog food programs their corporate holders own without knowledge and useful scientific data to back up what they are trying to sell. Or services that do not fit the needs. This is two stars because there is one vet and two techs that if we are lucky to get, actually do know their stuff and listen.

I've been coming to Banfield for almost 10 years. I really like being able to access different doctors that have different areas of expertise in northern Colorado which had been essential over the years for various pets I've had and conditions that they've had. I've been to the Loveland and Greeley locations but the Fort Collins location is where I go most often and they always do a great job providing great care and recommendations. They are also always so pleasant and professional.

Excellent place to have your healthy dog(s) teeth cleaned. To say “Hospital” in the name is a bit of a stretch. Our dog ultimately passed away 11 days later - Vet tech I encountered here was better suited to be on fries at a fast food place. - Had to call and explain to the vet where to look for the two lumps that we took our dog in for (apparently the vet tech didn’t relay our main concern). - How the vet missed one of the lumps on her initial exam is a head scratcher. Found them on second exam. - Found low red blood cell count on blood work, gave one week of pain meds, 3w of steroids. And said follow up. - (At this point we couldn’t trust there was enough competence to look at anything taken from the lumps under a microscope by this vet.) - Could not get our pup into another Banfield until 11 days later for follow up blood work. - We live out of town and we could not explain to Banfield Ft. Co. that our pup was out of pain meds but was scheduled for 4 days later @ Banfield Littleton. Almost asked person at Banfield if they could FaceTime so I could draw out everything on construction paper w/crayons to help them understand. - Banfield Ft. Co would not send a script to Littleton location or Walgreens/CVS “It had to be hand to hand” - just a 3+ hour drive. - Took my pup to urgent vet and found out he should’ve been put on a autoimmune med at the initial visit. (Also didn’t need to tell this vet where to look - found the lumps herself.) We signed the year contract with Banfield for vet care in February of ‘23 and found out the hard way all it’s really good for was teeth cleanings. The blood work my buddy received before he passed was covered but, the monthly cost against out of pocket for better care is the route I will go with in the future. I will find a regular brick and mortar vet for our other pup - Banfield sucks, stay away.
