How to Save Money at Garry Oak Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Top rated veterinary hospital! All of our four pets (3 dogs and a cat) attend this outstanding clinic and our family is very fortunate to have found this vet clinic. The team of professionals genuinely care for all their furry patients. Not only is the actual care and treatment of my pets been excellent, but the prompt follow up to check in and see how my pets are doing after a procedure is by far the best I have experienced. I have complete confidence in the vets and support staff. They make each pet feel special and the vets discuss and inform us on exactly the best options, ultimately keeping the health and well being of my pets a top priority. The clinic staff are down to earth and consistently friendly. The communication is exceptional regardless if it is in person, over the phone or in an email. I highly recommend this clinic for the care of your pets. 5/5 star review. Thank you very much for your care.

Super amazing veterinary hospital. Dr Emma was the sweetest soul I have met, made my Belgian malinois Lightning feel at ease as she is super protective around me and she was brilliant, Dr Dhawala was excellent with the surgery. Front desk, the rest of the staff each and every member was super loving, compassionate and kind. Called more than 30 vets before making this choice - and came all the way from Shawnigan lake, very happy that I made this choice. The prices were waaay better than the rest of the clinics too. Will definitely be coming here with all my 3 Belgian malinois. Thank you soo much. It means a lot after having a bad experience with one of the vets on the island almost was having anxiety thinking of taking my mal for spay, but so glad and happy to have found you guys.

I cannot thank the team at Garry Oak enough for their kindness, empathy, quality of care, and professionalism. We moved to the area a year ago and hadn’t yet found a family vet for our mostly senior pets. When one of our dogs developed an issue that required more involved treatment, we decided to bring him here based on the reviews we read. Though we haven’t been clients for very long, we’ve gone through a lot in a short amount of time, and Dr. Peter, Nicole, and all of the techs and assistants we have worked with have exceeded our expectations in every way. Dr. Peter has gone above and beyond to help us process a difficult diagnosis with empathy, taking the time to answer my many questions so we fully understand our options. And when my dog decided to chew on his stitches in the middle of the night, Danika called me back first thing in the morning so they could get him in for an urgent appointment that day, despite it being a busy Friday. Plus, they say my dog, who can be a little gremlin when he feels unsafe, is sweet, which tells me a lot about his relative level of comfort. I am very grateful to have found this clinic, and with three senior pets, I look forward to many more visits.

If you’re looking for a vet, Drs Thompson and Dhawala are who you want! They’re a dynamic duo who provide the highest level of care, comfort, and compassion for pets and their owners. They’ve supported us through regular check-ups, cancer diagnoses for both of our dogs, emergency visits, saying goodbye to one of our boys, and more. They don’t rush through anything. They take the time to explain what’s going on, offer different solutions, answer questions, and make sure you know what to expect and how to support your pet. Their team has the same level of care and compassion and gets to know you and your pet. I can’t thank this office enough for all they’ve done for us and will continue to do as days, weeks, and months go on.

Garry Oak Vet has been such a safe space for my puppy and I to get advice and help. We trust them and Raven genuinely gets excited to go there. As soon as we park the car, she sprints to get inside!
