How to Save Money at VCA Canada Ladysmith Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Absolutely amazing! 10/10 above and beyond care. Neutered my puppy today the before after care was so much better than my expectations. All my issues were addressed, options and procedures explained in a profession yet relatable, comfortable atmosphere. Emails, quotes, possible issues, phone calls on how it went immediately after, home care, you name it they looked after it. So thorough and thoughtful. I have been to 4 different vets and they are hands down the best. Thank you VCA for all you do, I am so appreciative!!

I took my cat to this vet a little under a year ago as I had found two small lumps on her I wanted assessed. When I brought her in I was guilted about and informed she had a “broken and angry” back molar that required dental surgery and was promptly given a $2000 dollar estimate as well as sarcastic comments about her lumps being a bigger concern (spoken in a way to imply they weren’t important at all) and despite paying for a lab sample, I do not believe a sample was ever sent to a lab as they called back the next day before the lab should have been done (required more than 1 day) to say the results were inconclusive and to inquire about the dental surgery. I spent nearly a year feeling guilty and like a horrible human because being low income, single and with inflation etc etc I simply could not afford a $2000 dental surgery. She was just assessed by a different vet last week for a diarrhea issue and I was informed that she does not need a dental surgery at all, and that her tooth isn’t broken and merely has some gingivitis. Only one single molar is affected as I paid for previous dental cleaning and surgery from an honest and very astute vet 5 yrs ago. An entire year of non stop stress and guilt to learn that I was lied to and scammed. I didn’t appreciate the energy or way I was treated at this vet so I never planned on returning anyway but now I am left in shock and disgust at the lies this vet told me to try and push and expensive and UNNECESSARY SURGERY ON MY SENIOR CAT. They also tried to push pet insurance for $150 a month on me as well as unprofessionally TEXTED ME two months after the appointment to further guilt and inquire about the unnecessary dental surgery. I have never in my life been texted at random by a vet to push an expensive unneeded surgery. This place should be closed down and sued.

Worst experience - they tell clients they’re a waste of time for missing one appointment, incredibly rude manager annd receptionists and poor handling of my dog. I’m still considering reporting this vet. Glad I now have a wonderful vet office who takes care of my guy with professionalism and quality care

I was refused to purchase my dogs special dog food. We were traveling and was running a bit low on food. My dogs been on a urinary SO kibble for 10 years. I’ve always been able to walk in anywhere and pick up a bag. As a military family we move often so my dog doesn’t have a specific vet which this office insisted they’d need to call and confirm the prescription. Funny thing is, I went down the highway to another vet office and they were happy to sell me a bag of my dogs food. NO QUESTIONS ASKED. This food is not cheap by any means so walking into a grocery or pet store is not an option.
