How to Save Money at Valley Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My pets and I have always had a great experience at Valley. All the vets and staff have gone above and beyond to take care of my pets. My dog has been sick since she was a baby and they have been there every step of the way to improve health comes and give her a long happy life. Thanks for all your compassion and care. Lots of love from Sidney, Snacks & Marbles.

Just awful experience. My dog was having respiratory problems and my usual vet could not get her in till the following day so they said they'd phone their sister vets to see if they could get her in. Fearing she may get worse I agreed and they phoned back to say Valley Vet could see her. They didn't seem interested in addressing the problem we came in for. Instead all she did was talk about my dogs teeth saying they were loose and had to be pulled and how they wanted to do a cleaning. She proceeded to try and cram a tongue depressor into my dogs mouth which my dog then snapped in half. If my dogs teeth weren't loose before they'd probably be now. Then she put one of those little muzzles on her to try and look in her mouth again. My dog did not like either the vet or her assistant. They were not very gentle or caring. I wish I had read the reviews before going there. I will never take any animals of mine there again and will tell other people to stay away from them too.

Dr. Steinebach and his staff are awesome! He is very knowledgeable and explains issues carefully and thoroughly, without talking down to you. His staff are all courteous, caring and very friendly.

I was hesitant to leave a review but after seeing all the reviews mentioning Dr. Steinebach and our sudden exit from Valley Veterinary due to our mistrust in his knowledge and abilities I decided to leave one. We were loyal clients of VVS for almost 7 years. About 2 years go we noticed a change. Dr. Steinebach recommended an urgent surgery on a senior dog with a history of illness that was being treated with medications. We got a second and third opinion as we were hesitant to go through with it. We found out our girl did not need a surgery at all. Reading all other reviews suggesting that Dr. Steinebach recommends treatments that are not necessary or needed I can attest to that. Dog food is over the top cost wise at VVS. I found other resources to buy for half the cost.

I was seeking a specific treatment for my dog, that he's been receiving for 10+ years. We have a general vet that we like very much, but they don't have the equipment for this treatment. We were directed to Valley because they had the equipment. From the first, they were trying to talk us into things we didn't ask for, or want. They were told very clearly that we have a primary care vet, but they kept pushing. Today, only 1.5 hours before my appointment, I was called and informed that we wouldn't be provided this treatment without an exam, which of course has an additional cost. I took time off work and arranged a ride to get to this appointment, that was going to stretch my finances as it is, being right before the holidays, only to be told less than 2 hours before my appointment that it was now going to cost more. I believe they did this to back me into a corner and attempt to force me to say yes. I had to cancel because I can't afford both the exam and the treatment. Now my dog doesn't get the treatment he needs for a 10+ year chronic, stable, condition. Without that treatment, his back legs could become paralyzed. Also, the treatment has no risk of complications, so it couldn't possibly hurt him. I was told an exam was necessary because the treatment we need is like getting a prescription, and the doctor wouldn't authorize it without an exam. I could understand that if what we were seeking would put him in some risk. It would not. It's a cold laser inflammation reduction, and can't possibly hurt him if it's administered correctly. Absolutely no reason why he would need additional testing or an examination. Literally just needed exactly the same treatment he got last time, which is in his records. This was railroading. Clearly Valley cares more about the money they can squeeze out of me than my dog. I will not be returning. Frankly, I'm disgusted.
